Unpack this answer from James this afternoon

Go back and listen to his answer.
Audrey asks if he is committed to PENN State and the first word out of his mouth is .. “yea.” and continues with the stated quote
Kind of a misleading report.

Some people start sentences with "yea(h)", the way others do with "so", "well", or "um."

There something nice about simple, single declarative sentences.

You know what undermines these types of articles? They imply that the Penn State administration cares more about the success of the football program than the coach. Of course we as fans care, but unless it affects $ does anyone honestly believe that somebody such as Barron cares? LOL

Regardless of whether you support CJF or want him gone, it is a completely absurd implication to think that the administration cares so much about on-field football success; it destroys the entire premise of the article.

Might want to add another 17.5 to the spread after this answer. 🤦‍♂️

LOL.

I know people have slips of the tongue all the time. But something isn't right here. Clearly Illinois is on his mind. More than it probably needs to be. It's not hard to see why his teams struggle after losses -- it starts with him and his focus.

His mind is elsewhere (at least during the presser), which is a bad thing for a game against this kind of opponent.

I watched it live. He did say yeah and then what was listed above.

I’ve never seen him so zombied in a press conference as he was today. Constantly talked about focus on Illinois(3 times I believe) as well as calling OSU Ohio before fixing it.

IMO he wants to be here. But he’s devastated by the past 3 weeks. He saw us undefeated and playing this weekend. The 2 injuries were the worst we could have had. Seat is getting hot.

He’s always jumped around but he hasn’t in 8 years. I suspect he thought he’d be on top of the mountain by now. Problem IMO is he won’t have an easier path at USC or LSU. He probably knows this is the ultimate fight or flight moment of his life. And given the circumstances it is tough given what he is facing to finish out the year.

Gonna be interesting for sure each week the rest of the way.

Agree with all.

I can't imagine how Ryan Day is going to pounce on this as evidence of "disrespect" to dial in his team even more. Obviously CJF wasn't disrespecting anybody, but he's clearly not dialed in.

He's teetering on becoming a broken man at the moment. He needs to dump the past few losses and move on. But he's not the type to do that.

Not good, Bob.

This is correct. The thing with Franklin --- when does he have a proven track record of fighting back better after facing adversity?

His record after losses (he's now 3-20-2 ATS in such spots) speaks for itself. PSU loses a game, it almost inevitably becomes a second loss. Even when we win games after losses we rarely look good (2014 Ohio State is the principle exception here).

I have no problem with this. Even if he says he is staying nobody will pay attention. it is getting clicks and that is all the media wants.

Is he staying? Is he going? who knows? Nobody, probably not even him.

I've never seen that ATS record before. Holy shit.

But yeah......even in wins, we look like crap. Temple after the Pitt loss in 2016. Minnesota after the Michigan loss in 2016. Indiana after the OSU/MSU losses in 2018. Indiana after the Minnesota loss in 2019. Rutgers after the OSU loss in 2019. And so forth.

Mental focus and energy after losses have been bad.

First I’ve read this; my question to Franklin would be - what else do you want? Higher pay won’t make him work harder. More money for assistants? Bigger office? More social media edit makers? Bigger recruiting budget? Just not sure what he wants and isn’t getting. I remember BOB throwing a shitfit about wanting a golf cart to drive around campus.

You gonna post this article on every thread? Just want to make sure to look out for it if I decide to start the Jukebox Thread a little early this week.
No, just didn't want to start another new thread but wanted to make sure it was listed on all 4 threads talking about the same thing.

My feeling is this:

If he would come out and say he wants to be here 100% and isn't going anywhere, I wouldn't care if they finished 7-5 or worse. I would support him until the end.

But his act is getting old and it makes it harder every day to support him not knowing if he even wants to be in State College anymore.

I could honestly see a retirement and go to tv side for a while to get recharged and then pick where he wants to go.

2 guaranteed bets in sports: The patriots NEVER lose 2 games in a row and Penn State under Franklin NEVER covers the spread after a loss or a bye or both. The stars aligned this weekend for a nice little parlay that paid me handsomely betting both my teams did not beat ATS(Penn State/Jets).

The last time he had his back against the wall like this was 2016 after losing badly to Michigan to fall to 2-2. I'm not implying the same thing will happen this year, but say he has never responded to adversity well is incorrect.

His record ATS is meaningless in terms of his job performance. That's a metric that only matters to gamblers and sportsbooks.

I fundamentally disagree with you. The rankings of this sport and "perceptions" are intertwined into how you "look" and perform "ats" in games. If OSU simply won every game, after their loss to Oregon, would everyone be orgasming themselves talking about the "eye" test and how OSU is now a shoe in to the playoffs. ATS is actually a decent way to see how a team is trending and how much of a threat they are to get higher ranked or so on. Yes, ultimately wins and losses on the field will define Franklin's tenure at the school, but 3-22 ATS after losses is absolutely a statement to his preparedness and focus after a loss. Its irrefutable that Franklin's teams do not perform well after losses, I do think that says something about his performance.

It's certainly instructive in identifying trends in how his teams perform after losses.

As has been stated before in this thread, he's lost more than a few games in back-to-back fashion (the OSU-MSU double whammy in consecutive years was a killer), but his teams have looked like shit even in many of those wins. That tells me that he doesn't get his team over the loss effectively enough. I can't say why that is -- I'm not in the locker room. But it's obvious that his teams come out sluggish after losses. That's a clear cut trend.

Looks like we're going to get another shot at Illinois this weekend. Good...I hope the game plan is better on both sides of the ball.
He said that Clifford is back and will be 100% so maybe this time we'll have a shot.

Did you not watch that 2016 Minnesota game? Let's be honest - we were fortunate to win. We were down 13-3 midway through the 3rd and absolutely spinning our wheels on offense until the Irvin Charles TD came out of nowhere.

Let's also not forget ... with better clock management Minnesota kicks a field goal to win the game instead of kicking that field goal to go up 23-20 w/ 1:00 left. Minnesota made mistakes in simply giving us the chance to tie it up and force OT.

That game very well could have been a loss. We looked VERY flat in the 1st half of Minnesota 2016. If we had lost that game, then it's 2-3 and Lord only knows how it could have spiraled from there. If nothing else, we would not have won the B1G that year.
