There's only so many OT threads during the offseason that I can take anymore so a new thread idea I thought of is putting some highlights from the most random PSU game I can think of in recent memory each week, and then giving some random old thoughts on that game. To each is own but at least it'll give us a chance to talk about some old PSU teams and some players we may have forgotten about. I wont get too deep into the game, I'll just highlight 2-3 thoughts I remember from the game. I'll share my thoughts on the game and please chip in if you disagree or have a comment about a random part of the game.

This week, the random game I remembered was from 2010 when PSU traveled to the defending national champions home turk, ALAAAABAMA. I remember going into this game pretty excited because it was a big time game between 2 of the most storied programs in all of CFB, college gameday was there, defending champs, ESPN primetime, etc. I anticipated the lions to get destroyed to be quite honest because our offense didn't have too much firepower and with an inexperienced freshman QB playing in arguably the toughest environment in CFB.

Once the game started, I thought PSU held it's own on both sides of the ball. We moved the ball into Bama's redzone on the first 2 drives only for them to end in turnover's. Bama's offense was suffocating though, we stopped them here and there, but it was kind of inevitable them getting there's at some point. If you would have told me before the game started that we would hold Bama to just 24 points, I would have said absolutely and then some. Overall, this was a pretty boring game to watch from a PSU perspective, but cool to see the highlights of a game i completely forgot about, as well as names I haven't heard in years.

This is one of those games I wish had been scheduled later in the season. Would still have been a tough matchup, but we didn't stand much of a chance with Bolden at the helm so early in his career. At midseason our offense took fire after Galen Hall switched QB's and put Matt McGloin in. With Matt as the trigger man we were competitive in every game even against top opponents.

Our lousy run defense continued to hurt us that season however.

I was at that game--fun trip except for two things: the final score and the heat that day. Made tailgating awful (the weather wasn't that hot the rest of the week). My brother had a lot of supplies, but about all we did was sit around and drink water. Didn't feel like eating anything.

I was also at that game; I don't remember the heat being bad, I remember it raining all afternoon (I don't think it rained during the game, but it made tailgating not awesome).

The tailgating set up there is very weird. There aren't any lots (other than the RV lots which are pretty far away) so people set up in very small parcels (which have to be reserved ahead of time) on the green spaces around campus. So picture tailgating on the HUB lawn, the Mall and basically any green space. As a result of the small spaces, there weren't super elaborate setups (e.g. if you had a huge food spread, you probably didn't have flip cup). There is also a culture(?) of having golf carts (sometimes elaborate golf carts) to schlep all your stuff from where ever you have to park your car to the tailgating spot. Very weird. I was at a tailgate that had a little more room (it was run by a couple of faculty members, so they had commandeered an odd little patch on land by their building that probably wasn't technically a tailgating spot) so there were a couple of TVs to watch early games and decent food. No one was drinking though except for the people I was with (which I found super odd...20 non-drinkers tailgating together??)

I recall being very worried about the game because of Bolden's inexperience. I thought they played OK considering. I haven't watched the highlights above, but I recall what a thought was a bad call on a fumble that ended up being a 10-14 point swing (Alabama had a long fumble return to set up a TD IIRC)

I found Bama fans to generally be pretty nice, although I was harassed by a few very drunk, very redneck fans (including one who looked like Billy Bob from "Varsity Blues"). I'll just chalk that up to a late kickoff time and lots of people smuggling booze inside the stadium.

Edit: I watched some of the replay; the bad call I remember probably was the right call (it looked bad from the stands; early 2Q) and PSU actually forced a fumble on the fumble return which PSU recovered, so it was actually a net loss of about 90 yards, but still almost certainly took 3-7 points off the board for us.

Is this the game where Richardson was running for 7.3 ypc and looked like a future NFL HoF'er?
