...and one of the sessions is a 'conversation' with the NATO secretary general, who is being interviewed by a NYT Pentagon correspondent (Helene Cooper). The reporter, perhaps predictably, tried to bait Staltenberg by asking what it was like trying to deal with Trump's request for EU members to spend more for defense (to the snickers of the Euros in the audience). To her surprise, she did not get the hate-fest response she had hoped for, as the Secretary General said simply that it was a reasonable request, and far from the most difficult problem NATO has confronted holding itself together over the years. He then turned the tables on her and asked if she knew what the most difficult situation was (which of course she didn't hazard a guess on). When informed that it was when Johnson and Degaul had a falling out and France pulled out of the military command coordination, she was unaware that had happened.
