Schiano: “I worked for coach [Joe] Paterno, and he was a proponent of paying the players way back.”

This article popped up on my apple newsfeed.
I found it interesting and was not aware Paterno felt that way.

Paterno was one of the primary movers behind CFB players being paid a "living stipend" (i.e., payment beyond tuition room and board) - that is a form of paying the players while allowing them to keep their amateur status. Paterno was not in favor of competitive bidding for the players services (i.e., professionalism of amateur NCAA football).
