Sarah Palin rebuked a now-corrected New York Times editorial that repeated a debunked claim that she inspired the 2011 Arizona mass shooting that severely injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
In a Facebook post Thursday morning, the former Alaska governor accused “perversely biased” news media for “attempting to destroy innocent people with lies and more fake news.”
“As I said yesterday, I’d hoped the media had collectively matured since the last attack on a Representative when media coverage spewed blatant lies about who was to blame. There’s been no improvement. The NYT has gotten worse,” Mrs. Palin wrote.
The New York Times has since corrected an editorial that received widespread backlash for linking Mrs. Palin to the 2011 assassination attempt of Mrs. Giffords.
In light of Wednesday’s shooting attack on Republican congressional members in Alexandria, Virginia, the editorial sought to argue that liberals should be held to the same standard of decency that conservatives were held to in 2011.
But as many critics rightly noted, Loughner’s hatred for Mrs. Giffords long predated Mrs. Palin’s target map.
The Daily Caller reported that amid the criticism of The Times’ editorial, another sentence was added stating, “no connection to the shooting was ever established.”
On Thursday, the editorial was amendedwith a correction.
