I saw this on the news this morning. I don’t understand the joy people get from the dumb pranks. I guess it is a certain notoriety or satisfaction they get out of stuff like this. Senseless. The shooter has to live with this the rest of his life as well.

So they can post it on YouTube, get "hits" and "Likes" and then try to make money from it.
They do it because they see other people do it and capitalize on it....and figure they can do the same. But in most cases, the pranks they are watching have been staged and thought out, to at least some degree, so that there no surprises like this.
Did you see the woman that put gorilla glue in her hair? The label says not to use it on cloths, skin and more but says nothing about hair. So she has hired a layer and is talking about filing a lawsuit.
No wonder a recent TV ad showing a space-car jumping a crater put up a "don't try this at home" message on the screen while Smoky Robinson sings "Cruisin".

Early in my wife's career she worked for an economics consulting company that determined and justified $ damages for civil cases for law firms. One of the cases she worked on was for the defense team of a lawn mower company. A guy was suing the company because he tried to trim a hedge row by holding a push-mower over the hedges. I'm going to go out on a limb and bet the guy who shot him turns out to be an asshole. The young man pulling the prank isn't an actual knife wielding killer so, if someone pulls a gun and says drop the knife or I'm going to shot you, the guy would have dropped the knife and started crying. It will be interesting to see the video from his partner in the prank. The shooter will probably get away with it because he will say he feared for his life but, I wouldn't want that on my conscience for the rest of my life.

There's actually a (small) Penn State connection here. For many years, Penn State had an exchange program with the University of Cologne. I was part of that program in the spring of 1978. The movie version (1975) is set in Cologne (as Böll was from there) and the title character lived in a apartment in the Uni-Center, a 45 story apartment at the tram stop we got of at every day. See ing the movie was part of our experience as students there.
