I guess this would be a helpful thing for a business to use to manage multiple projects, but I want to use this as a long term home project/event planner. For example, we could write in our wall calendar what events, parties, home improvement activities we have going on in 2015, but we can't go beyond 2015. I've found some interesting templates on line, but I can't get them to do what I want (allow assigning a task/event to a given day). I could create something myself, because I don't need lots of complicated formulas, but it would still be time consuming. Let me know if any of you have used anything like what I'm suggesting.

Take a look at Easy Resource Planner software. I use it as a scheduling tool at work. May too high level for what you are considering.

Does it have to be excel? Maybe give Google Calendar a shot? You can save everything to your google profile and then can be accessed thru any device by web or app.

Wouldn't a simple Gantt chart work ?

There are a bunch of templates built into Excel. Go to File > New and then you will see a bunch of these organized in several ways. I am guessing there is one there that will be simple yet get the job done.
