So tired of hearing about the Messi vs. Ronaldo argument. Both are insanely good players and you'll never convince a fan of either the other is better. I enjoy watching both play for different reasons...and I'll enjoy it for a few more years.

Second pair of matches kicked off at 2. Portugal with a wonderfully creative set-up, easy save but, wow, sublime.
Iran defender takes out his own keeper, Portugal blotches the volley, keeper and defender get in each other's faces, shoving. Ref should have given them both yellows, lol.

Halftime. Portugal leading Iran, 1-0, Spain tied with Morocco. If the results hold, Portugal wins the group and Spain moves on.
Yellow card for Portuguese player with a high kick. “Well deserved. He didn’t come close to the ball, the soccer ball.” I laughed.
At the 90 min mark, ref going to the VAR to check if there was a hand ball on Portugal in the box. Yes, the ball hit the arm, but IMHO, it's not a "deliberate use of the hands." Oh well, the ref called a PK. Unbelievable. So Iran will have a PK to tie the game, in stoppage time.

The ref in the Denmark - France game is doing a superb job. His positioning is excellent, he's made the correct "non-calls," his demeanor has been very professional, and on-and-on. While I haven't watched every game in this year's WC, the ref in this game has done the best job I've seen in this year's WC.
The refs get evaluated in each game, and that is used to determine if they get future assignments in the WC. Based on what I've seen today, this ref would be in the running to ref the final, though to get there he'd have to get an excellent evaluation in all of the future WC games he refs.

The France-Denmark match was rather on the boring side as both teams were seemingly content to draw. Argentina-Nigeria promises to be a real wild ride.
it was interesting, in that as you wrote, both teams knew a tie would work for them. At the same time, there were a number of excellent scoring chances, some good defense, etc. In the 2nd half, there were a number of times where Denmark seemed content to just pass the ball sideways between defenders, without much effort to advance it. The crowd let them know they were not pleased.
yeah, that does have real potential ... hopefully it lives up to it
