"One of the men, 35-year-old Dominic Sanginiti of Santa Barbara, was heavily intoxicated and appeared to be the main aggressor in the altercation, said the City of Santa Barbara Police Department.
As the two police officers tried to calm Sanginiti, they saw Sanginiti possessed a handgun holster attached to his hip and a knife protruding from his pants pocket, police said.
After Sanginiti refused to follow the officers' commands, police say they requested additional units to respond to the scene.
Both officers say they attempted to subdue and detain Sanginiti in case he reached for one of his weapons, after which Sanginiti "took a combative stance and actively fought officers."
The police department says an on-scene Harbor Patrol Office tased Sanginiti, allowing the police officers to take him to the ground. On the ground, police say they saw a loaded black handgun protruding from Sanginiti's waistband, not contained within the holster.
Officials say Sanginiti aggressively attacked and punched both police officers. Additional officers were able to help subdue and arrest Sanginiti while safely retrieving his gun.
Santa Barbara police say the initial responding supervisor and police officer involved in the arrest both sustained injuries that required immediate medical care, including a dislocation and a broken bone. The suspect did not require medical care."
