New ROSTER weights are posted

What I noticed:

- Chop listed at 250. Just saw an interview where he said he was up to 255 without a loss of speed. Just good that he will be bigger and stronger after a year in the S&C
- Vilbert at 6'6", 275 is Courtney Brown size. The forgotten man at DE. Hope he can get out of the dog house and be a factor this season.
- Beamon at 284 and Durant at 280 along with stronger/bigger DE's should help the run defense. But how much? LB play could make the DL look better as well by cleaning up their mistakes for 3-4 yard gains instead of the 7-9 yard gains we saw at times in 2022.
- Looking forward to see the bigger/stronger Carter. I just don't see how he could play better than he did the 2nd half of 2022. Hope I'm wrong.
- The true freshmen olinemen shouldn't be needed in 2023, but they look pretty stout on paper and from the limited pictures available, other than Onoh at 275 after just showing up a couple of weeks ago.
- Nice to see the PA Safety Flowers up to 197, but I have a hard time imagining how he gets on the field with all the talent at Safety.
- Nice stout group of TE's. They need to knock some DE's and OLB's into the secondary.........

Artis 320. Ellies 302. JVDB 301.

Ford up to 287 is nice. Townley at 267, why is he at DT?

OL is going to lay on some people.

Safeties

Nelson 6'3 217
Mack 190 (up from 175)

Nelson is possibly our most physically imposing safety as a true freshman.

Mack added some weight fast.
Saw an interview with one of the veteran players who was asked which of the new players impressed and I believe he mentioned Mack first. I'm looking for him to be a human missile on special teams in 2023 and a player fighting for playing time in 2024. I'm hoping he can cover well enough to play some CB (possibly in the slot) and be a physical player there......

Yep, Artis at 320, nice. I wonder if he can be in the mix this fall? I hope so with that size I would think he is definitely in the rotation. Izzard at 294 seems like he has beefed up too. Would like to see Durant get to at least 290.

Potts has some weight for 5'9" and 218. With all our RBs in the 220 range that is great and especially for 3rd/4th and short and goal line packages. Warren and Theo are twins.

Can Nelson remain at safety? He may continue to fill out and become a LB at some point.
Hope he stays at Safety. Those are the kind of imposing Safety's that Bama has when their defense is about unscorable, if that's a word.........

Was watching a review on one of the sites that was picking 5 players to break out for 2023. One was Winston. The highlights of him from the PT last season are impressive, especially given the limited snaps. He's also a big athletic player for a Safety at 6'2", 204. Can we get Pitt on the schedule for this year? Veilleux would know better than to ask to go into the game.....

I'd say that most of the gains are over by this point. My assumption would be that getting everyone slightly stronger while maintaining their weight will be the goal for most. With fall camp coming, weight will be shed from the running program.

I read an article that they slimmed Potts down some since he arrived. Read like "he needed that weight to play in their system, we'd like him to be lighter and faster than he was there."

I am curious if he will be the 3rd RB in our Power T set or if they keep a TE in there for it. The options are plentiful and i look forward to what Yurcich comes up with.

Good question. It looks like Mills didn't follow that route (he's at 200, which squarely says S to me) after some speculation that he might grow in Sam LB. I think they would like him to be a Brisker type who can do both as necessary, but at the end of the day is a true safety.

Yeah I saw it too, at this rate he can get to 290 by the opener!
Probably could easily get to 290 by September, or possibly next week. But for all we know the staff may believe his best playing weight is 280. Or 275. Who knows.

I agree that his best playing weight doesn't seem to be 255 which he seems to have been at in the past.........

I'll call it now: Starting DTs will be Ellies and Van Den Berg. Beamon and Durant the 2s.

No Izzard?

Opening night vs West Virginia, my guess is this:

1st- Ellies AND Beamon
2nd- Izzard AND Durant
3rd- Van Der Berg
4th- Artis
5th- Townley
6th- Blanding

I think we rotate the 1T guys a little more than the 3T guys.

I wonder if we play Ellies at 3T some to "get bigger inside" and match him up with another 1T type?

Can Townley hold up at 267? Blanding already up to 275. I didn't think Townley looked inside strong, but he seemed high motor.

I look for Durant to blossom this year. Hopeful Artis can contribute 10+ snaps and push for more. Need to keep this group healthy and fresh.

I wonder if the Townley weight is accurate. I believe that was his weight last time these were released. He could have missed weigh-ins for multiple reasons.

Good question. Strange that it hasn't changed considering he has been mentioned as being moved to DT. Hopefully it's just a little gamesmanship or motivational related.

I believe you forgot Ford, who transferred in to have a chance to play and who has some experience.
I'll go with:
1st- Ellies AND Beamon
2nd- Izzard AND Durant
3rd- Ford and Van Den Berg
With Artis getting some snaps mainly in garbage time as develops.

I also believe that Izzard has a chance to be 1st team 1-tech as he seemed to be the most disruptive of the 1-tech DT's last year down the stretch. I'm looking for Durant to get a larger proportion of snaps in 2023 than he did as a true freshman last season, and if he performs he may end up as "Beamon OR Durant" by the time PSU gets into the heart of the 2023 schedule.......

Should be interesting to see how VDB progresses after the hype about his progress in the S&C program.

I did. Lol thank you for reminding me.

I'd slot Ford in the same as you for opening day. He has enough experience that he shouldn't be a drop off coming in, but could be strong enough to take snaps.

Agree with you on Izzard and Durant as well.

Remember Ford is a run stopping specialist so he may replace a starter sometimes in certain situations (goal line, 3rd/4th and short).

If a player plays great at a certain weight, do you really want him gaining weight?

#Carter, #Katron

It's all about what they are capable of and how the weight is put on.

If they can get faster, stronger then in theory, absolutely. Why wouldn't we want a bigger, stronger, downhill stalking Carter blowing up RBs?

This is what separates the good from the great. Balancing that line. I highly doubt we will want Carter weighing 260 next year, but him getting to 250 in the summer means he ought to play '23 in the 240s.

Who is the starting MLB?
Elsdon started last season but King basically split time with him and looked better than Elsdon particularly down the stretch of the season. With Elsdon out this past Spring I have to believe that King will hold off Elsdon for the starting job going into 2023. But it seems it will be a camp battle. Robinson has great upside but I don't see Diaz jumping him over King as the Will spot calls the defenses which is almost as important as playing the position after the snap.......

It is all about the results. The results were already good. Adding weight and getting faster is an UNKNOWN. THey can just as easily get slower.

Allen was 220+ coming in and lost weight. By all accounts he was BETTER and faster with less weight.

Who are these "all accounts"? Link where you have seen or heard that Allen added weight but isn't as good now.
