For those of you in the Northeast, please, as you're out there today, don't forget to use your sunscreen and bug repellent. It's gonna be a scorcher.

Just think of all those fuel oil, natural gas and electric company workers who are facing uncertainty because their companies can no longer milk you dry to heat your house. As you consider how to spend the massive windfall in saved energy expenses in 2016, do not forget to give thanks by donating to BWI's favorite charity:
THE demlion FUND: "Money. For demlion."

Always remember the demlion children. Their tuition is due, and so is their room and board.

Remember, all donations to THE demlion FUND are fully non-tax-deductible.

Cut more wood dem, the cold will eventually make it here. Merry Christmas and after reading your thread, I emptied my pockets and threw your donation up in the air and said dem, take as much as you want, I'll keep whatever reaches the ground. You now have your donation and thanks for letting some fall back to the ground for me and my family. It's a joy donating to you and feeling so good about it.

THE demlion FUND is grateful for your generosity.

We've been giving to Dems since the LBJ Administration. Still waiting for a return on our investment. Regardless, Merry Christmas Dem...

Yesterday it was the year end solicitation from the NLC in the mail, now today it's ANOTHER solicitation (before breakfast) and there's no club, no seating, no parking, no decals, no nothing. I am scheduled to update my estate planning documentation next week, I'll certainly mention THE dumblion FUND. Yours too!

I hope the demlion fund goes to driving lessons.

Wait! Are you saying demlion is freeh?

So what exactly do my 2,647 Demlion Club points get me then?? The glitzy brochure mentioned something about having priority at a time-share vacation in an exotic location. And a once-a-year dinner with.... well, it wasn't specific with whom, but the general assumption among my fellow DLC members is that it's with someone terrific at some really great place. I also got a lapel pin, due to arrive any day now... any day now.... according to the three pages of fine print and the page where I checked a bunch of boxes. And I get to park my car near Demlion's place in the Caribbean. When it's built. It's all outlined in the 2017 capital plan.
Interestingly, if I am dissatisfied in any manner, I am not allowed to sue TSM. So there's that.

Merry Christmas! Happy 2016!

Eh, all those fuel oil, natural gas and electric company workers will be just fine. I'll need to cool my house throughout the winter. y'know.

Now you've jinxed the entire remainder of the Winter season. I predict unseasonably cold temperatures for your area during January :). You're like West Virginia's version of Punxsatawney Phil....kinda like Larry Lynx..

I am pretty sure you will get a sincere thank you card in the mail. I know I still have some of those around here.

Whatever happened to the Human Fund? I will give all day to that Fund.
This is the successor to The Human Fund. The Human Fund was, unfortunately, found to be nothing but a scam, shocking as that is.

Here at THE demlion FUND we pride ourselves on openness and transparency. Honorary Board Chair Karen Peetz insists upon a thorough basis for every penny we spend. Director of Security Mark "I Forgot" Dambly vets our prospective hires with a practiced eye. He knows what sorts of people will earn you a forgettable week in jail, and where to file the forms which will convince the feds to underwrite losses on your construction projects.

"Mumbles" Eckel and "Clem" Masser are our Social Chairs, so when it's time to party, we really know how to kick out the jams. Let's just say that since I put those two nimrods in charge, the Sheriff has called for the county to pave my driveway so they stop tearing up the cruisers coming up here to roust Mumbles and Clem.

As a responsible reverse-philanthropist, it makes me ashamed and sick to imagine the ways in which the fictional Human Fund preyed upon the emotions of its ersatz donors. Those guys had some good ideas, but they were bad for the industry. I, for one, am glad they are gone. :)

From the Lynx...

Larry Lynx is a Mobian lynx infamously known for an uncanny ability to cause bad luck to anyone nearby, friend and foe alike, granting him the reputation of a "super jinx".

Sweet. Holz hausen. I stack my wood the same way. Mine look more like this one:

http://s374.photobucket.com/user/penick000/media/holzhausen.jpg.html

I have about 5 of them on my property right now. 6 feet across by 6 feet high. It is about a full cord of wood. I have a sh!tload of red oak I just got over the last few weeks and I am still splitting it. Once it is all split we will build a 6th one.

I just have to ask.. So you have 5, going on 6, of these huts.

Do you know which hut is most aged and do you take the logs off from the top or does your family play a large edition of Jenga and just start pulling whichever log is most convenient?

Since I built them from wood that I cut and obtained from various (free) sources, in every state of being from dripping-sap green to standing dead with the bark falling off, I know which one is next based on that alone, but I also can look at the exposed ends of the wood for checking to further confirm my choice. Firewood dries mostly from the ends. Two pieces of oak can be evaluated for relative dryness by examining the amount of checking (cracking) on the ends.

I have some Osage orange that is in the oldest stack I have, but it is an exceptionally dense wood (highest btus per cord of any American firewood I ever see) and so even tho it is in the oldest stack I may not take it down first because you gotta let it season completely or you will choke that chimney with creosote.

If I ever figure out how to host a picture I have taken myself, I will post pics of my stacks here.

Very educational post. Now I need to Google "Osage Orange" and learn why it's so dense and creosote prone (probably related).

So do you save the highest BTU wood for the coldest nights of the year when you want the benefits of low slow heat?

Last question.. What fraction of a log do you chop your wood? 1/8th or a combo 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16? I can see the benefits of each.

Depends on the size of the piece you start with. Smaller pieces burn hotter, all things being equal, but hotter means faster so you can slow it down by mixing in bigger chunks. I just burn it as it comes to hand though. The difference is not all that great. If the best wood is a ten the worst I burn is about a 7.
Osage orange is native to the Great plains. It is sill used to make bows. Mostly it is ornamental here in the east

So in the interim I Googled "Osage Orange" and discovered that it's that crap-ass tree that drops these huge "oranges" that look more like green pomegranates. They fall In the street, the vehicular traffic runs over them and it's looks like a bunch of vegan Chick-fil-A cows were headed to the Whataburger. Green "turds" all over the road.

So how does it burn? It seems like one of those perpetually green- wet trees to me now that I know what it is.

If you just want to post the occasional picture and don't want to bother with signing up with an image sharing site, you can upload your own pictures to tinypic and get a link to use here.

1. Go to http://tinypic.com
2. Upload an image file
3. Tinypic will provide four types of links. Ive had success with the fourth one, the one for "Direct Link for layouts".
4. Copy the link. It will have the form: http://i63.tinypic.com/ojh4xk.jpg
5. When drafting a message here, click the image button and paste the link:

Well, actually I have not used it much before, though I always notice it when I see those big "hedgeapples." It is sort of a holy grail. This chart shows why. 30 million btus per cord. Since I lack experience I am going to over-dry it if necessary to make sure it does not gum up the works. Once it is seasoned properly it will burn like most anything else, just slower.:)

Most of what I burn now is ash, since the emerald ash borer has killed every single ash in the county where I live. Ash is a bit of an outlier in the firewood game--it is light like poplar but relatively high in btus--similar to red oak, but higher than walnut OR cherry. There is an old English poem that goes, "Ash wet or ash dry, a King will warm his slippers by." This is a reference to the wood's quick seasoning time--even green, living ash, once cut and split, can be seasoned for the stove in a few months, and even if you burned it with the leaves still on it, it produces very little creosote.

Ash is of course also used for baseball bats, and the borer has shut that business down pretty hard. MLB is now using soft maple. That is why bats shatter and throw shards at the pitcher more often now. 2/3ds of what I burn this year will be ash.

Merry Christmas (belated, but still heartfelt) to my friends here on this board. Your sense of humor, your sometimes common sense, your knowledge and information that are provided throughout the year are deeply appreciated by this old guy.

May 2016 bring continued health and happiness to you!
