"Focus on the ones that you have, not the ones that got away"

A lot of truth to that but, SMH, it looks as if Fields meets all the criteria for a once in a decade type of player:

  1. Heard from 3 guys who coach at the @Elite11 & each said Justin Fields is THE most impressive QB they've seen in their 6,7,8 years working it

Since Last Year :) ........ and until Next Year :)

NOTHING to do with how "good of a prospect" Fields may be, but:

How one "measures" most of the qualities listed - - - - - in a setting of:

"a bunch of guys running around in shorts and t-shirts playing a 7-on-7 game of catch, with a football" for a couple of days ........ well, that's just "interesting" :)

But apparently he's missing the one very important thing, the "it" factor: the intense desire to come to Happy Valley and be a Nittany Lion. Not everyone has "it" but those that do are special.

That being said, there's always the .1% hope lingering in the recesses of my mind that his de-commitment is just his way of dealing with all the pressure for him to stay down south, that he remains a silent verbal, that he and Franklin devised this plan and he'll sign with PSU in December. (Hey, a guy's gotta dream!)

True. This kid has the physicality of Cam Newton so he's probably in the "can't miss" category. Think of a guy like JT Barrett who is physically gifted but really isn't your typical QB. Or, on the flip side, think of a kid like Trace McS who isn't going to turn heads in terms of speed, size, strength or arm who just seems to make the right decisions, has great pocket presence and delivers the ball to where it will be most effective.

Well, same things were said about a couple of QB kids who got recruited the same year....as it turned out, neither one of them panned out. And a walk on beat them out for the starting QB position and has parlayed that into a nice NFL paycheck.

I hope Fields does well, but nothing is guaranteed to make you a success, not even God given talent.

From a previous thread concerning Anthony Morelli.

First time I saw him live was at the Nike Camp held at PSU, which took place toward the end of Morelli's sophomore year in high school. Almost everyone in attendance was talking about him -- he was that impressive. The QB guru that was at the camp couldn't believe what kind of talent he had. (I believe that was Bob Johnson, a long-time QB guru, and the guy that started the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp.) He said to several of us that were working the camp that Joe Paterno should make sure this kid didn't get away from Penn State.

At the camp, there wasn't any type of pass that Morelli made that wasn't a thing of beauty. Everything hit the WRs in stride, whether they were 10 yard curl-ins, 30 yard outs, or 50/60 yard bombs, as well as passes made while he was rolling out.

And that's just what CJF is doing. And CJF realizes, unlike some here, that the 2018 recruits don't "get away" until the signing periods in December and February!!

Jimmy Clausen was not the next Theisman - but the next Jesus Christ (same initials and all). Fortunately, football is more like soccer than basketball - one guy isn't going to make or break anything.

I recall a few years ago while Joe was still alive we recruited a QB from Michigan. Name escapes me. But he was supposed to be all world, too. Ranked out #1 at the Elite 11 camp. Started a game at Alabama. He was a non-factor. Now I'm not saying the same will happen to Fields. I'm just sayin. You win some you lose some.

You should read the 247 story on Fields' showing--it's hilarious.

The kid is good, no doubt.

But....

Ron Powlus says hello.

Dan Kendra, Ron Powlus, Jeff Smoker, Anthony Morelli. We got one of them. Zero of them were actually good.
