It was like the old normal at Panera, at least for a few minutes.

My wife and I went to a Panera in New Jersey ( ) this morning. She held a table outside while I went in to order our scones and lattes. I also asked for two cups of ice water. Normally, Panera has a runner to bring customers take-out orders, but no one was there as I waited for my order. A guy behind a counter doing food prep handed me my order. When I asked about the cups of ice water, he said I could get them myself from the fountain since there was no runner.

So I actually grabbed two cups and filled them with ice and water myself. Me, with these hands. It was exhilarating. Euphoric. It reminded me of what the world once was and perhaps could still be.

Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.

Did you use tongs?

No. I actually miss the days of grabbing things with my hands (other things :( ). It was refreshing to possibly pick up germs and spread my own. I’ve been sterile for so long.
