Nahhh. Its never been a big deal.
When I was younger it was to see the ball drop but that was it.
Now I usually go to bed before.
Also when I was younger there was never anything good on. It was Dick Clark New Yorks rocking eve or nothing.
Thank God for Bowl Games. ;)

Just another day. We may go to a friend's house who's having a shindig, but we'll still be asleep long before midnight.

My girlfriend wants to do dinner and drinks with another couple. I'll oblige, but want to be home shortly after midnight.

After all, there is a meaningful game the following day ;).

We go out with another couple and have dinner and drinks. Our reservation is for 5:30, so we're not out very late. Other than that, there's no celebrating.

Maybe grill some steaks and shrimp with brother and SIL and mom joining us. Watch TV or battle board games of Sequence or Farkle. By 10-11:00 those in attendance start making their way to the door.
Wife to bed, I watch last of bowl games and check my pool sheet. I may make it to midnight, but not a loss if I don’t.

...we usually have one or two close couples over for drinks and snacks ...a fire in the fireplace...champagne at midnight... a year's worth of family stories to tell ...and then pots and pans out the front door to welcome the New Year...
... when we we were much younger we would have a party for 6-8 local couples ... champagne.. and then everyone went out to the backyard and down the large slide at midnight...if it was snowing it was even more fun!... some of our friends who are still with us still recall those trips down the slide with a drink in hand...

We toasted, privately, at midnight and went to bed. I do recall a couple of times when I went out an had fun.

This year, I will be in Key West. So I am looking forward to it. I am close to a complete non-drinker, but may make an exception this year to participate in the festivities. We'll see how the mood strikes me.

NYE has always been a letdown. I mean, it’s nice to get together with friends, but I just typically don’t feel like “celebrating” the end of the thrills and joys that come with the holiday season that precedes it.

I usually host cocktails and apps early evening and then join friends for dinner somewhere else. But by 10:00 I am thinking about hitting the sack. As the Bard wrote, "We are such stuff as dreams are made on; and our little life is rounded with a sleep."

wife, son and I go over my good friends house and spend the night there. we stay up past midnight .... easy, fun and safe!

Yep, when you get older you just feel those balls drop!

January 1 is an annual Holy Day of Obligation, the Circumcision of baby Jesus, which requires that a Catholic go to mass that day, otherwise you’ve commited a mortal sin. If you have a mortal sin in your portfolio, and you get killed before you get a chance to go to Confession (or whatever they call it these days) and receive absolution from a priest, you go straight to hell. Those were the ironclad rules I was taught by the nuns, priests and my parents.

So my answer to your question is I haven’t been out on New Year’s Eve since Dec. 31, 1999. Everytime I went out on New Year’s Eve I sinned abundantly. Most other times out also. I haven’t been to Confession since high school. I’m going straight to hell where I will join an untold number of Catholics who were raised by the same rules. That is the rule. Try as the Catholic Church may, you can’t just change rules willynilly after they’ve been hammered into your head from birth. That’s another rule.

There’s different rules for everything (also a rule).

I will be driving 12 hours home from my wife’s family’s house in MN. Doing that so I will be home in time to get some sleep to get over to my brother’s house for our traditional bowl games and poker day. Extra special this year that it will kickoff with the Penn State/UK game.

We went to a casino last year and had an ok time. One thing I notice at casinos though is that not many people actually seem to be having fun- their TV commercials make it look like it's all one big hoot, but I always see a lot of grim faces. Maybe they expected to win something- I never figured they spent all that money building those places to put money INTO my pocket.

GF flies home Sunday. Hoping NYE will be a big deal for me.

Just not the same anymore without The Grateful Dead doing their annual New Year's Eve show from Fillmore West.
On the bright side, XM is broadcasting Phish live from MSG, so that might be nice to catch.

For us older folk it was guy Lombardo.

I worked evenings nearly every New Years Eve from ‘99 through 2016, unless I was on vacation at the time. I actually volunteered to work them. When I retired, there was great consternation because all of the sudden others had to work it on an assigned basis.

Some people party, others don't- how do you treat NYE?
Used to go out with other couples for dinner and get together/drinks at someone's house. Last few years my wife's health kept us home and I would prepare some great finger food. I lost my wife in June so I will be home alone preparing myself a very nice T-bone dinner. Then drinks and a few tears will be shed I'm sure.
Happy New Year everyone and stay safe.

Stopped at Key West during our cruise - won’t be getting off the ship next time. Definitely not kid friendly. Where are you staying/celebrating?

Same to you Greg. I hope you have an excellent evening and bowl game afternoon as well.

At the stroke of midnight, look up. She'll be smiling at you. Happy New Year.
