My son is pretty solid conservative but sometimes he gets frustrated and stops thinking straight. He got sick and now he's worried he's going to run out of paid time off. He works with a lot of Europeans who get 4 weeks or more.

He started complaining about how good they have it and how the U.S. abuses their workers. I responded that you can't just look at the things that are better, you have to look at the whole package. It's easy to say they have "free" healthcare and more paid time off but look at the other things. They pay $8/gal for gas. Their tax rate is 42% for people making over $60k. They generally get paid less and VAT taxes are near 20%. Except for Germany most European countries have a 9% unemployment rate. I told him that I'm not dissing other countries. I'm pretty well traveled and there are some great places in Europe. They're just different and you need to look at the complete picture.

He responded that I had a point. He talked about how his counterparts in Europe make 20% less than he does and they live in small homes. I think his brief love affair with socialism is over after a day.
