The Second Mile program is forever linked with the abominable crimes of Jerry Sandusky, its founder who is now serving 30 to 60 years for child sexual abuse.
While it is impossible to know how many children it assisted over the years, we can't help but think about all the children it never had the opportunity to help because of the Sandusky scandal.
It's impossible not to look at the program as being a convenient way for Sandusky to come in contact with potential victims. Indeed, that's how he found some of the youngsters he was convicted of sexually abusing. Its detractors will continue to see it as a vehicle that enabled his crimes, with administrators who didn't do enough to stop it.
We don't have all the details of what officials of The Second Mile did to possibly create an "uncooperative atmosphere" during the Sandusky investigation. However, it certainly wasn't the many Second Mile volunteers who were to blame for that, and we are sure they were just as horrified as anyone about the Sandusky charges, likely more so. The goal of the rank-and-file volunteers was to help the children, not aid Sandusky.
Sandusky's association with the organization and his heinous crimes shouldn't obscure the fact that the group helped many youngsters. That in no way justifies the abuse that took place, but it should not be overlooked.

The name is a biblical reference is to Matthew 5:41, part of Jesus Christ's Sermon on the Mount. Its message has deep meaning: "And whoever shall force you to go one mile, go with him two." It references the laws in the time of Jesus that a Roman soldier could compel any Jew to carry his pack for a mile. Christians, however, were told to carry the pack for a second mile, to show that they would go above and beyond what was asked of them It also would give them a chance to teach a Roman soldier about Christianity.
In other words, turn the other cheek and spread the faith.
Now, that reference rings hollow. However, we were pleased to hear that its basic mission is being carried on through a Texas-based nonprofit with a location in Altoona called Arrow Child and Family Ministries.
PennLive contributor Sam Janesch reported that The Second Mile has less than $1 million remaining to its name, and a formal dissolution petition could be finalized this year, according to David Woodle, the organization's CEO.
How toxic are the remnants of the Sandusky scandal? Arrow doesn't even want to re-create the most prominent of The Second Mile's program: the weeklong summer camps that would play host to up to 1,600 youngsters, according to Ashley Saylor, program director for Arrow's Pennsylvania operations. They later became known as a "meeting spot" for Sandusky. Woodle, however, said the camps went by the wayside "only because they couldn't afford them."
Whatever the reason for their end, hundreds upon hundreds of children were put on the right path through the summer camps and were never exposed to Sandusky's dark side when they were being held. The youngsters had to meet certain goals or they were not invited back the following year. Now those camps are gone.
"Everything is sad, but the saddest part was the loss of the programs for the people who needed them the most," Steve Seltzer told PennLive. He was on The Second Mile board for about 10 years and helped with the registration part of the camps with his wife.
While it is great that the core missions of The Second Mile are being carried out, Arrow Child and Family Ministries simply doesn't have the clout and cache that the pre-scandal Jerry Sandusky had. That's a shame. With Sandusky and his ties to Penn State, this could have been a powerful organization to help children for years to come.
It's yet another way that Jerry Sandusky ruined the lives of so many, and not just those he abused.
