So my fav state college hotel for games has been the days inn on Pugh - which is no longer there. Sucks bc could walk everywhere.

I’m using points so my options are (Rutgers weekend) :

Days inn n Atherton or
Super 8 south Atherton

They are the same distance downtown (1.5 miles)

Days inn is 399
Super 8 is 489

Points are the same.

Thoughts?????

I live in town so don't stay at the hotels or visit them much. That said, the Days Inn just changed flags and became the Days Inn and when I drove by yesterday, it looks like they have done some reno at least on the exterior. Don't know if rooms have been upgraded. It is a question you could ask them.

Many years ago, I stayed at a Super 8 in Suffolk Virginia on the 4th of July.

Since that horrific experience I vowed never, ever to stay at Super 8 anywhere.

The owner / GM charging $489 for a stay at Super 8 should be arrested.

They probably have to make their money on football weekends because nobody stays there the rest of the year.

I'm surprised somebody doesn't open up a seasonal campsite just out of town with free shuttle service back and forth. That might be nicer than the Super 8.

Neither are very attractive to stay at, to be honest. Super 8 is where the... ladies of the night set up when they're in town. The Days Inn was originally a Motel 6 25 years ago and was a Comfort Inn or something like that immediately before becoming a Days Inn.

As far as location, North Atherton has a lot more going on than South. You'd be able to walk to Champs at least and the new Marzoni's is open right across the road. On South Atherton the only positive is a bottle shop on property and the only place to walk to is PJ Harrigan's at the Ramada.

The Days Inn used to be a Quality Inn. It’s really not that bad. I’m only there long enough to sleep. It’s a quick Uber trip to downtown, usually worth the $8 or so. (Beats a DUI). I’ve stayed there twice in the last 5 months.

Thanks everyone. Based upon what I heard I guess I’ll stay at days inn. Location seems to be better and there doesn’t seem to be a real rationale for the extra $100 at the other hotel - although perhaps that’s the cost to stay where the ladies of the night stay? Lol go state!

Traveling for work, I have found thst each hotel chain varies widely. I've stayed in spectacular Super 8s and also dumpy ones. Same holds for most chains.

The only lower level chains that seem to be pretty consistent and good are Hampton Inn and Microtel.

Year round visitation is substantially up in 2023. Local tourism board is doing a pretty good job marketing the area. Weekends have seemed to be very busy all year with weekdays picking up. Always a lot going on every weekend and not just in SC and around PSU. Ironman was a great event and should be an annual. Need more like it!

Need more full service hotels because if you build it they will come. NLI will be back and brand new next year and I hear Toftrees will be undergoing a significant upgrade and will be back as a Marriott Autograph Resort in about 3 yrs… bright future for tourism in HV and I didn’t even mention the casino and Bellefonte projects on the drawing board. About time!

I suspect many of the neighboring counties have benefited from overflow and that business should be kept in HV.

So visitation goes up when students are allowed back in school? I don't believe you.

What's the story with the hotel construction behind Sam's that's now stalled and the place is an empty hulk sitting incomplete?

Yep… that’s the HV Acropolis. Out of money and who knows. Like the bloody Autoport and the old QI in Milesburg. A disgrace to our area.

What’s the chamber doing to fill all the empty storefronts in SC? Terrible site. Highway Pizza closed. Pat’s cheesesteak is coming but where? The old Damon’s is still empty as is the old HoJo’s on north atherton. It’s becoming blight.

A recent article sounds like they are into creating committees and attracting international companies.
