Yes, his "improper behavior" was being boring.
 
I've never understood why he was popular
He’s very good at developing characters in his stories. He takes what might appear to be someone’s humdrum life and puts them in quirky and humorous situations. I can understand how not everyone would find him appealing.

Disclaimer: I have not been forced to write this because I live in Minnesota.
