Wow. And .50 cal is not a nice way to go....

A British soldier from the elite Special Air Service has shot and killed an ISIS commander from more than a mile away, in what is thought to be the best long-range shot in the regiment’s 77-year history.

Using a a huge .50 Calibre Browning machine gun, which is nearly 40 years old, the unnamed sergeant, who is a veteran of Iraq and Syria, managed to hit the fighter directly in the chest with a shot that blew off the commander’s arm and shoulder.

“The Islamic State commander was briefing his men and clearly liked the sound of his own voice because he was standing still for a least 20 minutes while his fighters sat on the ground in front of him,” a source familiar with the incident, which took place in June in Afghanistan, told The Daily Star Sunday.

While the incident has been described as the best long-range shot in the British unit’s history, a Canadian sniper set a significantly longer record last year.

In June 2017, the Canadian Armed Forces confirmed that one of its snipers had shattered the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot in military history at a distance of 3,540 metres (2.2 miles), The Globe and Mail reported.

"The Canadian Special Operations Command can confirm that a member of Joint Task Force 2 successfully hit a target at 3,540 metres," the forces said in an official statement. The unit was operating in Iraq and the target was also an ISIS militant.

Those guys are insane. Had to escort them and some SEALs around St. Augustine back in 99. They proceeded to get completely shitfaced in about 2 hours time Had no concept that because a me and a friend of mine drove them there that we couldn't get shitfaced with them . Caused so much chaos that when we had to go looking for them, every damn bar would just point in the direction they went and tell us we needed to get the britts outta there. Really nice guys but way over the top with EVERYTHING.

Too bad he only got one of them.

...using a Browning machine gun...?
...did he fire just one round or 100...?

Yes, a specially sighted Ma Deuce. He'd have to be a pretty dumb sniper if he put the gun on full auto. The recoil after the first round would render any sighting and calculations useless. That said, it could have taken more than one shot to make the kill, it often does at that range, bit not fired in a burst.

Do not eff with the SAS. And that goes for the Commonwealth special forces as well.

I’m sure he used the .50 BMG cartridge. Probably was not using a machine gun though. The .50 BMG can be used in a bolt action rifle.

Reports are that he used a vehicle-mounted Ma Deuce. Never heard of a specialty sniper rifle being so deployed.

Even more impressive then. There are multiple .50 bmg bolt-action/semi-autos that are used.

The M2 was used as a sniper rifle as far back as WWII and in Korea and Vietnam. Wasn't used extensively because it's a mother to lug around. But because of range limitations of the weapons available to snipers in those conflicts, the M2 was occasionally adapted. Carlos Hathcock used it from time to time in Vietnam, though the vast majority of his kills were made with a Winchester 70.

The owner of the business I work for also deals in firearms. Bought one of these chambered for 50 BMG a few years ago. On occasion when I visit our home office I like to go into Mike's office and handle the rounds.

What happens when a .50 caliber bullet hits a person? Link:

The Ma Deuce was not designed as an anti-personnel weapon. Its objective was to shred metal, unarmored or lightly armored vehicles and aircraft. On striking the human body, the cavitation diameter is greater than the width of an average torso. Incredibly demoralizing to anyone witnessing the carnage (except for the good guys).

The longest recorded kill shot is 3,871 yards by an unnamed Canadian in Mosul in May 2017. That's over 2 miles.

It appears Carlos Hathcock used the M2 as well for his longest shot.

That is an incredible shot given all the information required, distance, drop, wind, etc. and perfect timing of breathing, heartbeat, and pulse timing to take the shot so everything is perfectly still and nothing biological skews the shot. To discipline yourself at that level is remarkable as is the successful shot. I'd love to witness that operation sometime.

I wonder what those ISIS dudes sitting there listening to him thought. Probably something like, "awwwww shucks, I really should've stayed unemployed and living in my mother's basement eating hot pockets in the Detroit suburbs."

That's a big round. Apparently it does not nice things to the recipient.

I have a Taylormade M2 driver.:)

Yes, unlikely that shot can be made again by the same individual

It's a difficult shot (nothing like stating the obvious). Like this kill, there are no details of the longest one (3,871 yards). In the second longest, 2,707 yards, Corporal of Horse Craig Harrison fired nine rounds to range his targets before killing two Taliban gunners with consecutive shots(at the same distance. Harrison fired .338 Lapua rounds, which are nice pieces of ordnance.

The third longest kill was recorded by Corporal Rob Furlong, who fired three round to take out his target (the second hit the target's backpack). Furlong, a Canadian, cites use of American .50 cal ammo as contributing to his success.

Thanks for clarifying Art, I didn't review any of the details of the shooters, interesting.

There are just so many variables to hitting a target at distance. I've heard Furlong say that the difference in powder burn rates between the American and Canadian BMG, which are otherwise the same, made his shot possible. And the only reason he was firing American ammo is that he ran out of hiss own and was able to scrounge some from American shooters who were closer than his Canadian depot.
