U.S. service members killed in Kabul airport bombings, ISIS-K likely source of terrorist attack
Mark Sumner

Earlier on Thursday, two bombs went off outside gates of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. The Pentagon has now issued a statement confirming that one of these bombs resulted in the deaths of “a number of U.S. service members.” Other members of the U.S. military are being treated for injuries. Though the Pentagon did not cite an exact number,The Wall Street Journalis reporting that four Marines were killed, along with at least 13 Afghans and others who were gathered outside waiting to enter the airport. Taliban sources are also claiming that some of the Taliban fighters near the airport have also been killed. Causalities surrounding a second bombing, which took place about a block away, are unknown.

Credit for the attack has been claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant—Khorasan Province, also known as ISIS-K or ISIL in Afghanistan. As in all such situations, those claiming credit for such events may simply be lying. However, CNN is now reporting that intelligence connecting ISIS-K to the explosions is “firm.”

This attack has caused at least a temporary halt in what has been a highly successful evacuation effort in which over 100,000 people have been airlifted from Kabul to staging areas around the world. The pace of that operation had been increasing by the day, but reports now indicate that the airport gates are shut, and while planes have continued to come in and out, even after the bombing, it’s unclear when or how the evacuation process will resume. About 1,500 Americans are thought to still be resident in Afghanistan, along with several thousand Afghans who assisted U.S. forces during the two decade war.

Until Thursday’s explosion, the evacuation from Afghanistan had been remarkable for how it had proceeded with no U.S. casualties.
........
In appearances earlier in the week, President Joe Biden warned that that the airport was the target of potential attacks by ISIS-K and other terrorist groups. Over the last two days, both the Pentagon and the provisional Taliban government have issued warnings for people to stay away from the area outside the airport, citing knowledge of an attack in the planning. On Wednesday evening, NATO forces also issued a directive asking people to stay away from the airport based on what was described as “very, very credible” reporting of a terrorist operation underway.

Early reports indicated that the larger explosion, which took place near one of the gates where U.S. forces were allowing people into the military side of the airport, was a suicide bombing.

Seven Capitol Police officers sue Trump, allies, and extremist leaders in expansive civil lawsuit
Kerry Eleveld

Seven Capitol Police officers filed a lawsuit Thursday against Donald Trump and some 20 far-right extremist leaders, alleging a coordinated plot on Jan. 6 to thwart the peaceful transition to a new administration.

The suit is one of several civil lawsuits now targeting Trump and his allies, but according to the New York Times, it takes by far the longest view of the steps leading up to the Capitol siege, starting with Trump's claim in May 2020 that mail-in voting would “lead to massive fraud.” The suit also makes the case that Trump coordinated with right-wing groups and other political operatives to promote disinformation and sow doubt about the 2020 results.
.........
“This is probably the most comprehensive account of Jan. 6 in terms of civil cases,” Edward Caspar, the lead attorney on the suit filed by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, told the Times. “It spans from the former president to militants around him to his campaign supporters.”

Specifically, the suit names Trump ally Roger Stone along with leaders of the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers militia, and others. The suit argues that Trump and his allies violated the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 that prohibits the use of conspiracies to block Congress from performing its constitutional duties.

The lawsuit was brought by seven officers, five of whom are Black and shared their personal stories for the first time about the verbal and physical violence they endured on Jan. 6.

The Times notes that the suit mainly relies on news reports and some information gleaned from the government's criminal cases in order to build a narrative around the alleged plot to overthrow the government. For instance, it cites Trump’s instructions to the Proud Boys during a fall debate to “stand back and stand by” and connects it to subsequent public avowals by extremist leaders to use armed resistance as a means to “save the White House.” However, the process of discovery could also unearth new details about potential interactions between Trump, his inner circle, and the extremist groups that worked to incite violence on Jan. 6.

The suit now joins several other civil lawsuits seeking to hold Trump and his closest allies accountable for Jan. 6, including one filed on behalf of Democratic lawmakers, one filed by Rep. Eric Swalwell of California, and one filed by two Capitol Police officers.

Whatever comes of these cases, new information that had not previously been public will almost surely flow from them. The Jan. 6 investigation by the Select Committee will also add to the body of evidence illuminating exactly when Trump and his allies started to lay the groundwork for overturning his potential defeat and how explicit and far-reaching that effort was.

Live: Pentagon briefing on explosion at Kabul airport. 11 Marines, one Navy medic reported dead
Mark Sumner

A pair of explosions outside Hamid Karzai International Airport on Thursday have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 60 people, with another 140 wounded. Among the casualties are U.S. service members who were located at the Abbey Gate, one of several entrances into the military section of the airport. Reports have varied from four to 13 service members killed, though the Pentagon has yet to provide an exact number. The bombings, which were large enough to be seen on security cameras located miles away and felt throughout much of the city, were believed to be carried out by suicide bombers connected to Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant-Khorasan Province (ISIS-K).

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby is holding a press conference at 2 PM ET to discuss the explosions, the casualties, and what this means for the ongoing effort to evacuate U.S. citizens and allies from Afghanistan. Live coverage will be provided as updates to this article.

Gen. McKenzie emphasizes that screening people coming into the airport is “close up work,” work where those involved have to put their “hands on the clothes” of those being screened. “All American should be proud” of the service members facing this danger.

Asked if the ISIS threat cuts the evacuation short, and whether the attack will get a military response. Gen. McKenzie says he believes ISIS-K will attempt more attacks, emphasizes need to coordinate with Taliban, says that U.S. is continuing to bring people into the airfield, even in the hours after the attack. Calls on American citizens in Afghanistan to come to airfield.

McKenzie: “Yes, if we can find who was behind this, we will go after them.” Says U.S. continues to hold that it can go after ISIS within Afghanistan.

McKenzie provides some details on the explosion. Says it occurred at a gate where Marines were engaged of physical screening of people entering the airfield. Says Taliban is supposed to perform searches before people get to U.S. forces, says the circumstances behind this event will be getting further investigation. Emphasizes that these Marines have already searched 104,000 people.

TTM note: I heard speculation from a reporter earlier that the terrorists arrived via an open sewage ditch that goes thru this area. IDK.

Gen. McKenzie says he doesn’t believe additional forces need to be sent to Afghanistan. Says there are “very, very real” threats to the U.S. forces including not just suicide bombers, but possible rocket attacks or vehicle-mounted bombs. Says they are sharing information with Taliban and that the U.S. believes that some potential attacks have been thwarted by Taliban. “We don’t tell them everything, but we give them enough to prevent these attacks.”

Gen. McKenzie asked if the Taliban “let this happen.” Says its not a matter of trusting Taliban, because they have a reason for wanting the U.S. out of the country, which makes them “useful to work with.” Says that any time you build a non-combatant evacuation plan “you expect to be attacked.” Says mission will continue even if attacks continue.

Asked when the U.S. will stop taking evacuees and start withdrawing forces, Gen. McKenzie says that it won’t be a clear cut off, but that evacuees will still be coming out even as the military forces are withdrawn.

Unclear how ISIS bomber managed to get past outside checkpoints to reach U.S. forces. Not only are some of those checkpoints manned by Taliban, some are operated by U.S.-allied Afghan forces. Not know if the bomber was allowed through intentionally, was overlooked, or somehow bypassed the checkpoints.

WOW! FOX News Reporter Scolds GOP for It's Knee-Jerk Attack on Biden After Afghanistan Terrorism
News Corpse

From the moment that President Biden affirmed his commitment to finally end the twenty year long war in Afghanistan, Republicans and their Ministry of Propaganda (aka Fox News) have been launching utterly baseless attacks on Biden, Democrats, and the military that is struggling to save the lives of Americans in Afghanistan and their Afghan allies.

The robotic response by GOP partisans is to be expected. Their penchant for putting party before country is inbred into their political psyche. And they are devoted to tearing down America's leadership in the White House and the Pentagon whenever a Democrat is charge. It is the same predictable hostility to the best interests of the nation that Donald Trump displays, despite the fact that he is largely responsible for the situation the country finds itself in today.

That said, there was a hell-freezes-over moment on Fox News Thursday morning when they were reporting on a terrorist bombing near the Afghanistan airport. Correspondent Jennifer Griffin was apparently fed up with the flood of self-serving Republican criticisms flooding the airwaves that cast Biden as being at fault for the terrorist assault. And she let them know it:

"The Pentagon and the White House knew that it was a dangerous mission. But right now it's not a time for congressman and people on the Hill saying 'woulda, coulda, shoulda.' It's now time to look at the reality.

"The reality is that they got 100,000 Afghan evacuees out since August 14th. They are still trying to rescue Americans who are trapped outside of the airport. There are active measures in place and what I have seen behind the scenes here at the Pentagon and with military sources in Afghanistan is nothing short of heroic."

That's an uncharacteristically accurate summation of current events in Afghanistan. And accuracy is not something that Fox News generally aims for. But Biden's management of the evacuation, while not perfect, has succeeded in accomplishing the largest airlift in history in a remarkably short time span. And it is continuing even under these trying circumstances.

The risks were not unknown prior to Thursday's bombing. In fact, the U.S. State Department had been issuing warnings to Americans for days. The most recent alert was put out just the day before warning that...

This attention to conditions on the ground very likely saved lives. Meanwhile, Cadet Bone Spurs (aka Donald Trump) was busy dictating his alt-tweets to his spokes-shill, Liz Harrington (whose proxy Trump tweeting is violating Twitter's rules against circumventing a ban). Trump's message on this grim occasion was that "If [Democrats] could fight wars like they cheat in elections, we would win in one day."

So Trump is exploiting a tragedy in order to continue propagating his "Big Lie" that the 2020 presidential election was "stolen" from him. But what Trump surely doesn't know is that his infantile whining is an epic self own. Trump thinks that Biden and the Democrats are to be faulted for failing to "win" the war in Afghanistan after being in office for only seven months. Trump had four years to do it and failed to either claim victory ("in one day") or to complete a withdrawal.

Trump also gave Democrats a backhanded compliment with his admission that they outsmarted him by beating him in the 2020 election. Although outsmarting Trump isn't a particularly high bar to get over. And now he has even lost at least one Fox News reporter who recognizes that taking advantage of tragedy is not only bad optics, it's a display of gross indecency and inhumanity. Which is pretty much what we expect from Trump and his Republican Party.

President Biden addresses the nation following bombings at Kabul airport
Mark Sumner

A pair of bombs exploded outside the Kabul airport on Thursday, taking the lives of 12 U.S. service members along with a reported 60 Afghans. Over 100 more are said to have been wounded in the blast, with some of those injured being treated by U.S. forces at the airport. The blast temporarily halted the ongoing evacuation of American citizens and allies from Afghanistan, but on Thursday afternoon, Gen. Kenneth McKenzie held a press briefing in which he discussed what was known about the explosions and the ongoing threat from terrorist group ISIS-K.

Expectations are that President Biden will make a statement at 5 PM ET, then White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki will take questions. Daily Kos will follow this press event as it happens.
