An altered state
Think it’s a better situation today where it’s legal and closely monitored… pushing further underground takes away a lot of those controls. (Though I’m certainly slightly biased on it due to the free $ that some of them are today, and fewer options cuts that off)

The solution to all of this is to stop wasting your money and wasting your life on sports betting. The casinos and gambling sites stress, facitiously, about their concern if you have a gambling problem. THEY DON'T GIVE A SHIT. Why should they care if you don't?

I just don’t understand the draw of gambling. I was on a golf trip with friends last summer. Several wanted to stop in the local casino after dinner one night. I was bored to near tears watching for about an hour until a few finally decided to leave. Never had the desire to bet a dollar.
I have an extended family member who is addicted and has no interest in stopping. I can’t wrap my brain around that.
I would rather burn my money for a little heat than use it to place a wager.

Totally agree, and that goes for the states lotteries. As a kid, I recall the local numbers guys hanging out in the local store and on the corner. I'm sure the local cops got a little stipend to ignore them.

The ultimate answer will be for the casinos to begin funneling money to NIL earmarked to combat the stress caused by gamblers betting on player stats. Why aren’t college athletes getting a piece of the casino profits anyway?

I get that if you are extremely skilled and follow the game with great detail you can win with things like overall winner and Over/Under. I know people who get texts when a player goes on the injured list and bet immediately. So if a guy like Tua gets an ankle sprain in practice they hit the bet, with odds, before it adjusts.

But these prop betting things are in the flow of the game and have to be almost random. Who can know who is going to score the first points or first TD?

Friends dragged me to the Pittsburgh casino years ago. Terrible….horrible……and not just me. Hundreds of people were sitting at the electronic bandits just hitting the button over and over. And they were mostly just gazing around looking like zombies that were bored to death. Really strange experience.

Not at all like the beautiful, exciting people all screaming and cheering that you see in the advertisements. Only people that looked the least happy were the ones at the card tables where they actually interacted with humans. Or the dining area.

NCAA President Baker is asking all states with legal betting to outlaw pro bets….. betting on an individual player’s stats.

Says it puts pressure on players and some have been getting harassed over it.

Maybe the NCAA should ban colleges from partnering with gambling sites. That seems like progress they could actually make instead of this preening and misdirection.

I agree with you however, I like to go to a casino MAYBE once a year where me and the Mrs. will play the wheel.
We each have $100, win, lose or draw it doesn't matter as we look at it as an evening of entertainment.

My oldest brother has been a gambler since his college days. He doesn't like to watch a game unless he has money on it, and he's pretty into sports. He's in an independent living facility and drives to the casino most afternooons to play some craps and put in a wager or two.

But that's just how he rolls. His investment strategy is kind of similar. When his daughter was in Indian Guides his name was "Chief take a chance". Gotta hunch, bet a bunch.....

My other brother and I try to council him on it, but we usually don't get very far in our efforts. But at this point he's somewhat more responsible. Only takes $300 to the craps table and sometimes quits before he loses it all. As experienced as he is he really does know the best strategies.

He's 76 and not going to change at this point. And he realizes that he needs some of his investments to supplement SS to keep living where he is now, so together with my other brother and I keeping an eye on him, as well as his adult son, we believe he'll be fine. But it's easy to see how people totally out on their own get into serious trouble, or men with families to support can let those who depend on them down. Many sad things happen that didn't have to.....

As far as the NCAA goes, they themselves like to have it exactly to their advantage. The way they handled NIL as a free for all, for example. So if gambling has been legalized whey should people be restricted to suit the NCAA. I can see how it may put pressure on young people individually, but there is already pressure on them as they themselves in general want to do their best for themselves and for their team. So I don't believe this type of betting changes things much and the NCAA having done their fair share to screw over athletes and universities should stay in their own lane as far as I'm concerned.

The NCAA's issues with NIL are out of their hands. The only way to control that is through a CBA. But since the players haven't "collected" there can't be a collective bargaining agreement. The NCAA has been pretty quiet about gambling. What you don't know, probably, is that many of the NFL owners are major shareholders of the different gambling sites.

For example, Jimmy Jones was a MAJOR backer to get gambling into the NFL. Owners can own up 5% of the house. DraftKings is worth about $20B and growing. 5% is $1B. So 5% of DraftKings is worth what many of the franchises are worth.

Horse racing is actually entertaining, particularly the Triple Crown races. Most exciting 2 minutes in sports, right? Somewhat similar vibe to college football. I agree about casinos. I don’t get the attraction. My real problem with gambling is that state governments push it to the detriment of those least able to afford it. Pennsylvania’s recent lottery campaign is downright criminal. They show a beautiful young black woman talking about how great it makes you feel to play the lottery. And then how about the groundhog campaign? Budweiser and Camel were stopped from advertising their products with animal characters because that was grooming kids. But it’s A-OK for the state of PA. It’s disgraceful.
