Wherever you go in recruiting, from Pa to Texas to the Deep South and out to California you find the same programs -- Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama, and now Michigan. These programs are going everywhere for top-flight talent. Penn State needs to do that too. Going after LaVar's kid is a good start, but PSU needs to get stronger into CA and also into TX as well as more involved in the Deep South. Picking off Tre Nixon would be incredibly important.

Schools like USC and FSU can stay in their home states because of the wealth of talent there. Most oyjer schools stay within a 5-hour drive of campus but then add gems from elsewhere. Ohio State in GA and FL, Michigan in CA, and Notre Dame nationwide go far afield for prime talent.

CJF should enlist Tamba Hali in the recruitment of Wole Beitku. Hali had almost the identical background as Wole -- refugee from Africa, mother still back there. JoePa made him a star capable of a wealthy NFL career, got him a fine education, arranged for his mother to come to the U.S. Would help PSU land a prime talent from Gardena (CA) Junipero Serra, a California powerhouse.

Typical CL post.

When I saw who the OP was, and knowing he's a Bama fan I figured the "next step" he was going to suggest was illegal payments to recruits.

Do you mean we should oversign every year and then hold spring tryouts and cut whomever doesn't pull his weight by making up a medical issue or academic issue?

No thx.

We've got 3 pretty good kids from Alabama; Campbell, Torrence Brown and Parker Cothren. A good CB from Georgia in Grant Haley. A good LB from Calif. in Koa Farmer. Pretty sure Franklin isn't writing any player or location off. Hope we get Tre Nixon this year. But, we do have a good kid from Florida too in Amani Oruwariye.

PSU has never been a "national brand" in recruiting. Generally, it's the "factories" that have that reach. Exceptions are ND and in recent years Stanford (academics).
If we take care of "our" area and reach a bit to the south (greater numbers) we will be more than OK :)
Franklin is doing that. This is only his second recruiting class.

cjf knows what he's doing, establish the local relationships first, then in the future recruiting local guys is easy, that allows you spend more time expanding the base. I'd like to see a push into NC and Georgia, that will come in time I think after we own PA.

He's building some pretty strong pipelines in PA, Jersey and Baltimore/DC. You can have a top 15 recruiting class every year just dominating that area.

But CL knows that all of the best talent is elsewhere. SMH

Good point Brazillm10.

Plus, CJF established a recruiting beachhead in Georgia. The staff has ties in SEC land. Setting up shop locally with camps was a very savvy move.

As we all know, some great players in the GA and surrounding states might not make it to a PA camp. But they ... and parents ... might be able to create relationships with our staff in GA. If that continues, we may see an additional pipeline in a huge SEC hotbed area for talented players.

I think it's time for PSU to do what the Red Elephant Club does or that trade in your uni for cash program that Bama has going. In other words start paying more.

What do you think these satellite camps down south are doing....

CJF is already going in that direction. PSU is ranging much farther especially south than they did in the late Paterno years.

But PSU's base is PA-NJ, NE and the DC metro area and they need to own that the way Ohio State owns Ohio. Right now the most important thing Franklin can do is dominate the competition in PSU's home area. Then he can look further. And they are -- look at the satellite camps. I think you'll see more recruits out of the Deep South in particular as PSU builds up its relationships there. But if you can get an equivalent player from Pa and, say, Georgia, you take the Pa. player because that is the base.
