Picks:
AA: 107 Bachmann, 114 Smith, 121 Seidel, 127 Forrest, 133 Harer, 139 Bassett, 145 Milheim (toss-up), 152 Miller, 160 Harer, 172 Waters, 189 Garcia, 215 Lawrence (toss-up), 285 Morgan.

At 145, Milheim and Barvitskie have split close decisions this postseason. Johnson could well win 215; his common opponent results are nearly identical to Lawrence's.

AAA: 107 Morrison, 114 Sidun, 121 Dillard, 127 Wagner, 133 Parkins, 139 Perry, 145 Manville (toss-up), 152 Rath, 160 Cunningham, 172 Spencer, 189 Hogan, 215 Bechtold, 285 Kinney.

Watch the end of the 189 AA semi - Garcia from SC losing by 2 and restart at neutral with 5 secs remaining. He looked like he had conceded and took a desperation swipe at the Bald Eagle kid’s leg and gets the TD. The BEA kid didn’t really fight it, it was like he thought time ran out, but it didn’t and Garcia won in OT.

The desperation headlock Gibson threw in the 3rd against Harer was absolutely unholy. I thought Gibson took his head off and Harer just calmly rolled it through out of bounds

On the AAA side:

Kaedyn Williams came all the way back from his opening loss and took 3rd.

Kunstek lost to Marlow for 3rd.

AA was closer than the score. T2 at the final buzzer for Smith, for the final margin.

AA - Bassett TF Mingee 21-6, 2:55
AAA - Shaw dec Perry 3-1 SV

Bassett led 15-4 after the first. Mingee is not remotely on the same level as Perry or Shaw, still hot damn.

145:

AA - Milheim dec Barvitskie 3-1
AAA - Simcox dec Manville 4-1 TB

Milheim won on a takedown with under 5 sec left in the 3rd. Simcox rode out Manville in the first stall-out period, then escaped and got a late takedown for the final score.

Lots of familiarity in both matches. One going into OT, and the other being won at the final buzzer, should surprise nobody.

152:

AA - Miller dec Stein 2-1
AAA - Rath dec Gaj 3-2

Miller won on a takedown with under 10 sec left in the 3rd, after taking neutral in the 2nd.

AA - Miller dec Stein 2-1
AAA - Rath dec Gaj 3-2

Miller won on a takedown with under 10 sec left in the 3rd, after taking neutral in the 2nd.

Miller was clearly wrestling on a severely injured left knee. His wins in the semis and finals were incredible! Also, the end scramble in the Rath-Gaj final was awesome stuff! PA States never disappoints!

AA - Harer dec Weidemoyer 4-3
AAA - Cunningham dec Garvick 2-0 on a 3rd period reversal

Gotta feel a little bad for Garvick, a SR 3x finalist who never won the big prize.

AA - Waters F Fugazzotto 1:41, up 5-0 at the time
AAA - Spencer dec Morgan 8-4

SO 2x champ Waters has won both state titles by fall.

Spencer might be the most underrated champ this year. But he is good. He's a JR going to Lehigh.

Complete domination by Waters this weekend. He is impressive!

AAA - Bechtold F Marzolino 3:52, up 3-0 at the time

Lawrence is now a 4x PA state champ.

Miller was Nolf-like, won a state title as a freshman on one leg. What he did shouldn’t be underestimated, it was phenomenal!

I've been following wrestling since 1958, when I wrestled my first bout in 5th grade, and my brother was 3rd in the Region as a 9th grader. In all that time I think I've seen 2 or 3 defensive pins. I thought anyone pinned that way must be an idiot.

Watching the PIAA states the other day, I saw 5 defensive pins over the weekend. And a 6th pin that was semi-defensive.
What is this, some kind of epidemic?

One of my wrestlers was on the wrong end of a non-controlled fall at JH states last weekend. I was shouting at the ref about watching his knee because it was turned in a bad way and the ref called the fall while he was fighting off a low single upside down. No takedown had been awarded. That’s the first time I can recall ever seeing a noncontrolled fall being called from neutral.

It’s either a point of emphasis this year or it’s coincidental that there’s been an uptick in those kinds of falls being called.

Jason Nolf won his SR state finals that way.

Jason got tangled up in scrambles off his own shot 3 times. After the 2nd stalemate, he said something to the ref. He stacked his opponent the 3rd time.

Hershey was electric this year. The wrestling was so good. The crowd was up, the semis and finals were packed.
The parade of champions was better at our sectional tournaments. The late round Friday night was not fun, especially for an early turnaround. I enjoyed the girls but too much wrestling needed to be done in three days. To cut the parade of champions to same time was strange. Three podium presentations was tough too. Maybe girls come in all day Sunday. Give them their own day. Keep the AA and AAA Semis together

I wish PIAA would figure out how to isolate each finals match. Each set of 2 finalists earned the spotlight and should not have to share attention with any other matches.

Have AA/AAA alternate starting a day earlier. But always put AAA finals as the finale. Run all the medal matches first, then AA finals, then AAA.
