Zeke Jones will have yet another Pennsylvania wrestler on the Sun Devils wrestling squad as North Allegheny senior Zach Smith as committed to Arizona State. Smith is the third PA and WPIAL wrestler to commit to Zeke Jones joining Franklin Regional teammates Josh Shields and Josh Maruca.

Zach is a physical wrestler who is aggressive on top and enjoys picking up falls from any position. As a senior Zach was a PIAA State Fourth Place Medalist at 195 lbs. a season after qualifying for his first PIAA State Tournament appearance. As a sophomore Smith narrowly missed a State Tournament birth finishing fourth in the WPIAL/Southwest Regional Tournament. Smith also helped the Tigers finish as the PIAA State Dual Team Fourth Place program. The senior ended his career with a (155-37) record. He projects to compete at 197 lbs. for the Sun Devils and will benefit from work-out partners Zahid and Anthony Valancia two of the best high school seniors in the Nation.

Is Zeke blowing most of his available $$$ on this class, or are kids now heading to Tempe for less money to train with Sunkist/the US men's national freestyle coach? Just curious as it seems from the outside that he's loading up this year, while other big programs may be managing resources for next year.

1 - he's got WAAAAAY more money than everyone else - so why not spend it? If the kids work out it's money well spent, if not you get to spend it again. If PSU had 6.5 scholarships open this year, I'm sure we would be spending most of it (Just putting that number out there hypothetically, not guessing that meant to be what ASU is giving out).

2 - I doubt Zach Smith is tying up a lot of money. He would be a walkon/books guy here and it probably isn't much different in ASU.

it is somewhat misleading ...

the #48 is how Pa Power Wrestling' has Zack rated in their top 300 senior prospects in PA. Their top 11 are:

1. Cenzo Joseph
2. Sam Krivus
3. Michael Kemerer
4. Josh Shields
5. A.C. Headlee
6. Devin Brown
7. Dylan Reynolds
8. Korbin Myers
9. Patrick Duggan
10. Andrew Dunn
11. Kellan Stout

Re: what am i missing? best finish 4th at states - #48 recruit?

Yes, that's #48 in PA, not #48 nationally.

Article didn't mention: national #5 recruit Lance Benick (from Minnesota) also headed to Tempe to wrestle 197. Guessing this makes Smith a depth recruit for Sparky.
