Just a reminder that a wrestler must appear in half or more of the rankings to appear in the Average. At 197, Rasheed appeared in 4 rankings, Cassar appeared in 3 rankings, and AWN put both in the rankings (1st time I've ever seen something like that), so Rasheed is in the Average. (In the computer generated rankings, where multiple wrestlers appear, I use the highest rated PSU wrestler.) Keener only appears in 3 rankings at 133, Kuhn and Schnupp, respectively, each only appeared in 1 ranking at 125 so those 3 are not included in the Average.

Nope...clerical error on my part. forgot to run that portion of the sort sequence (finished it up at about 2:00 in the morning)...has since been corrected.

Wow, SHP. Tournament gap has really widened with O$U falling back into the grips of Iowa. Are you also projecting bonus?

The Wrestle Stat I saw had Penn State #1 in tourney; am I looking at the wrong place?

hah, you caught me. I had to take a call while I was posting the WrestleStat rankings, and did not go back and finish the team Tournament and Dual ranking update. I've now corrected that.

No problem. I just wanted to be sure that I was looking in the right place.

Not SHP's info...he'll surely provide that later..

By InterMat, sans bonus, Big Ten's only...

Penn State 139
Ohio State 132.5
Michigan 107
Iowa 89.5
Nebraska 63.5
Rutgers 53
Minnesota 48.5
Illinois 47.5
Purdue 47.5

SHP anyway of projecting B1Gs?
1. Penn State, 171
2. Ohio State, 144.5
3. Michigan, 119
4. Iowa, 118.5
5. Nebraska, 93
6. Rutgers, 86.5
7. Purdue, 55
8. Illinois, 53.5
9. Northwestern, 47
10. Minnesota, 46.5
11. Wisconsin, 38
12. Indiana, 28.5
13. Maryland, 18.5
14. Michigan State, 1.5

And before you ask, that last one is not a typo.

I assume this includes Nolf wrestling?

They still have Gasca, BIG runner-up last season.
A solid MSU is good for the sport, but man, have they fallen. Looking at Wrestlestat, which includes all back-ups, RS's, and on and on, their starters, other than Gasca, are #36, 166, 94, 51, 102, 87, 122, 142, and 136.

Let's see Kollin Moore can lose a match and stay #1, Vincente Joseph loses a match and falls to #3 must be something wrong with this picture

But don’t they normally say past years results don’t matter? Though NATO was number one for quite a while without wrestling a match so past performance had to count since he did not have current performance.

You're kind of taking out snippets, and also lumping all ratings together, when they don't all follow the same guidelines.

First off, past year's results do matter in some rankings. If they didn't, how would the various sites generate preseason rankings, and rankings in the first couple weeks of the season? They don't get to sit back and ask Carnac the Magnificent how the rankings will look after NCAAs. Some rankings start with past-year results and don't include incoming freshman or RS freshman. Others use past-year results, but speculate/guess as to where to rank the newbies. The Dual Impact Index takes a different approach, and doesn't post rankings until the season is several week old, and there is enough data to generate credible rankings.

How the rankings handle wins and loses also varies. Some look at the body of work over the season, and others do a combo of body of work AND head-to-head comparisons.

@Crusher1950 also generalized a lot in his response. At 165, where there were 3 undefeated wrestlers heading into last weekend, and 2 after the weekend, I have no problem with Joseph moving from #1 to #3 in many of the rankings. At the same time, Dual Impact Index, which is computer generated is also on sound footing having Joseph remain at #1. It's a matter of the formula/approaches that a ranking service uses. As for the 197 situation, I was not surprised that most rankings kept Moore @ #1 after his defeat to Cassar. None of the wrestlers below him were undefeated. Cassar had a few so-so loses on his resume this season, and was not even the starter on his team.

I enjoy each site that provides rankings, and try to keep in mind their general approach when viewing their rankings.

I totally agree that there are many rankings and each are handled differently, and yes, I did lump together there, though it was not really my intent. I was just showing an example that probably does work at a few different rankings.

Also I know that 197 is a different scenario due to how wins/losses move around at that weight. No clear replacement for Moore, everyone has some losses that can be pointed out.

You guys can play around with the placements, etc for each and every weight, and let the system calculate total points earned per wrestler and team via the Tournament Projection Tool. It starts out with the current WrestleStat rankings, then you can swap out anyone, at any weight to see what the projected NCAA tournament points would be.
