A fair amount of turnover from last year with 4 new starters (3 being transfers).

125 – Norstrem (So)

A NCAA qualifier last year with a 12-16 season record. I’m not sure how he qualified (0-2 in the ACC tourney), but he did and got a win so good for him, going 1-2 in the tournament.

133 – Myers (Jr)

A transfer from Edinboro going 1-2 last year in the tournament (from the 14 seed). Myers takes over for Gustafson who went 1-2 (from the 9 seed) for VT last year.

141 – Moore (So)

Moore had a 20-11 season record and went 1-2 in the tournament last year (unseeded).

149 – Blees (Sr)

A past transfer from Oklahoma State, Blees went 23-9 for VT last year and 1-2 in the tournament (from the 12 seed).

157 – Mekhi Lewis (Fr)

He will most likely take over the starting spot from LaPrade (So) who went 12-12 last year and did not qualify for the tournament. (LaPrade had replaced an injured Solomon Chishko, a 2 time AA who went 6th @141 in 2016 and 6th @149 in 2017. Per Flo, Chishko will not be wrestling this year.) Lewis had a busy redshirt freshman year going 28-2 in open tournaments @165. His 2 loses were both against Marstellar.

165 – McFadden (Jr)

Two-time AA McFadden is back, coming off a 5th place finish last year (from the 2 seed). He finished 6th as a true freshman in 2016.

174 – Bolen (So)

Bolen qualified as a true freshman going 0-2 in the tournament (20-12 season record). Cody Hughes (Jr) also returns and could be in the mix here (he made some starts @174 last year and had a 17-14 season record).

184 – Zavatsky (Sr)

Zavatsky returns for his final season at VT. He is a 3-time qualifier and 1-time AA, finishing 6th last year from the 6 seed (1-2 in 2017, 2-2 in 2016).

197 – Sleigh (Sr)

A 2-time qualifier transfers in from Bucknell (0-2 @197 in 2017, 2-2 @184 in 2016). Sleigh takes over for 3-time AA Jared Haught (2nd in 2018, 4th in 2017, 6th in 2016, 1-2 in 2015).

H – Miller (Sr)

Three-time qualifier Billy Miller transfers in from Edinboro (2-2 in 2018 from the 13 seed, 1-2 in 2017, 1-2 in 2016). He replaces Andrew Dunn (who transferred out). Dunn went 1-2 in the tournament last year for VT (19-15 season record).

Virginia Tech returns 2 AAs (McFadden, Zavatsky) and loses 1 (Haught). Sleigh is not likely to replace Haught’s points but VT has some upside potential at Heavy and 157 compared to last year. I would expect a similar finish to last year (8th/47.5 points).

Lewis is really, really good. That said I am always pessimistic on freshman who cut a ton their first year. I think the cut will get to him, but if he can manage it he'll definitely be on the podium.

Miller will be battling John Borst - fFR - for the spot. Borst is moving up to 285 this year according to reports.

Lewis is a red shirt freshman and will definitely be a contender

Regarding the weight cut. I dont know where hes gonna find the pounds to cut unless he was wrestling light last year at 165

Maybe Bolen will redshirt, Lewis continues at 165 and McFadden bumps up to 174.

I’ve been somewhat surprised that no wrestler from nearby Christiansburg High School - it’s won around 14 state titles in a row - has ever won a national championship for VT. Joey Dance got kind of close, and the kid d who took second at 141 in Retherford’s freshman year (Carter maybe) was a Logan Stieber away.

they are a small school in Va and won all of the championships at the AA ranks per se (compared with Pa) and now with 6 divisions in Va it doesn't mean a whole lot!
The Predator club in Chesterfield (South Richmond) has a good club program making good waves.

Christiansburg HS also spent most of the years Dresser was the coach ranked in the top 20 in the country.
