Regarding offensive line, is it poor recruiting or poor coaching or both?

Secondary made a lot of splash plays this year, but gave up huge plays at critical moments in games. 4th and 15 and give up a 20 yard touchdown pass is unacceptable.

Consistently beaten on both sides of the LOS most of this season. Unacceptable for a program like Penn State. That has to change.

Franklin is obviously a great recruiter, but a very mediocre game day coach. Consistently outcoached....terrible play calling and failure to make defensive adjustments.

Defense was a huge disappointment after the Iowa game. Losing PJ hurt, but the rest of the unit failed to step up.

Trump has really struggled to develop offensive lines and consistent running games. We only had any sort of running game when we had star NFL running backs. Notice how many coordinators we’ve cycled through without fixing the problem?

PSU has a lot of 4* kids that haven't panned out. So either Franklin's recruiting skills are overrated or else he and his staff are poor at developing talent.

Penn State should have won the Iowa, Illinois and Michigan State games. They had questionable play calling, critical mistakes and let the games get away from them. OSU and Mich were both winnable games. Penn State needs that extra something that the other team seem to have. I think some of the coaches decision making and creativity in the play calling could be improved.

Franklin chases stars. He needs to start chasing players like Poz, Lee and Conner who can just play football.
The 2018 class had 3 5* recruits.

We only got Parsons because of an OSU recruiting violation. Then he only played 2 years.

Slade transferred to Old Dominion. Shorter transferred to Florida. That class didn't live up to the billing.

Since then we have lost high rated PA kids to OSU (Flemming, McCord).

So why do people keep saying Franklin is a great recruiter?

I chose to keep positive about yesterday Franklin was very consistent again in dropping an easily winnable game against ranked team to move his record against teams with a pulse to 2-17!! YHAY FRANKLIN!!

Plus Brandon Smith HAS TO BE LEADING THE NATION IN MISSED TACKLES PER GAME!! The man is HUMAN WHIFF machine!! At least we are leading the nation in one defensive category. I for one will miss him cluelessly chasing after backs after they have gained 30+ yards because of him being out of position or failing to actually wrap his hands around a player in a proper form tackle!!! He is poetry in motion! I love his favorite move of running directly into the nearest guard on a running play so he can quickly be thrown to the ground so the back can easily make it deep into the secondary until Brisker or Brown can finally drag the ball carrier down (after picking up the first down of course!).

Good summary and great case that changes need to be made at the top…this is not year 1 or 2 or even year 4 or 5…it is year 8…unacceptable!

Some perspective about expectations. Recall PSU was ranked #19 in pre-season coming off a 4-5 covid campaign.

Iowa State was pre-season #7 and finished 7-5.

UNC was pre-season #10 and finished 6-6.

Florida was pre-season #13 and finished 6-6.

Miami was pre-season #14 and finished 7-5.

USC was pre-season #15 and are currently 4-7 (they have a covid re-scheduled game this coming weekend)

LSU was pre-season #16 and finished 6-6

Indiana was pre-season #17 and finished 2-10

Basically a full 1/3 (including PSU) of the Top 25 going into the season finished with 5 or more losses.

So yes, I would like to see PSU do better and win the close games (see my other thread on close games vs blowouts). But to imply that all is lost or Franklin doesn’t know what he is doing or that this season is something unique to PSU is just missing the big picture: college football is hard and random and weird. That’s why we both love it and hate it.
