OT: USA COVID-19 Vaccination Updates

I just got my second shot today....I certainly didn’t do that so that I can keep living the same f**king way I’ve been living. They need to open sh!t up soon.
where do you live and what can't you do?
I live in Michigan, and there is nothing I cannot do right now.
Was in Arizona much of winter, and same situation there.
Heading to Vermont for a beer trip in a few weeks and good to go there (with vaccine).

I can’t go to a high school sporting event, I have to wait forever to get into most restaurants, I can get into retail stores as long as there aren’t too many other people, I can’t go to a large gathering, I may or may not be able to go to a minor league baseball game depending on how many tickets are available and so on...July 4th they should open up everything completely and drop all mask mandates....then in the future we can celebrate two independence occurrences on that day.

Restaurants still at 50%, high school sporting events are parents only, retail stores still limited capacity, mask mandate still in full effect, no large gatherings....when I say open things up, I mean open them up completely with no restrictions.
It’s a mixed bag and until the numbers revers for cases and hospitalizations I doubt it will change much.

In Pennsylvania which I thought was pretty restrictive, Restaurants are open at 75% with no policing, high school sporting events are open to everyone, weirdly Penn State and the Big Ten are still restricting folks from attending things like soccer games which is sad.

I know in State College at Mt. Nittany Health hospitalizations are on the rise and there is a plea from the medical staff for everyone to comply, mask up and get vaccinated. I suspect until those go down ( currently 23 in the Covid ward I believe) things will remain the same Locally. once daily positive cases and hospitalizations go down you will get your wish. We all will.

The numbers here have been going down for weeks, yet still not opening up....many governors aren’t going to give up the power.

Is that even true? J&J is 6 in 6 million developed a clot. Earth population is 7.7 billion. So 7700 people get hit by a satellite falling from space? If only the USA, then 350 people get hit every year? Doesn't seem right unless they are counting foul balls at MLB games. I guess I better be looking skyward more

Dang, had to look it up. 1 in 300 trillion to be hit by space debris. Link below

Odds
Do you mean CNN was really, really wrong? Imagine that!

High school sports are NOT open to everyone.

2.6Mshots yesterday so total up to 192.282M with the 7 day rolling average at 3.38M. 78.4% of shots administered is the national average, 36.8% of population with 1+ dose (note this is percent of population that has been given 1 or 2 doses, so total percent that have been pricked by a needle), 22.7% fully vaccinated.
So far, 122 million Americans have received at least one dose of a vaccine. At least 75.3 million people have completed a vaccination regimen.

Doses delivered is 245.26M compared to yesterday 237.65M. So 7.6M doses delivered yesterday, 7.6M doses delivered for the week. Previous week totals for doses delivered is 29.9M, 28.22M, 23.8, 21.1M, 20.0M, 19.7M,21.2M, 5.1M, 9.96M and , 9.4M.

77,270 positives reported yesterday compared to 62,332 week over week. 7-day rolling average is at 72,262

Fatality was 819 compared to 460 yesterday and 873 week over week, 7-day rolling fatality at 748.

Michigan with a data dump yesterday. 81 on the fatality (highest in country) and 10,277 daily positives. Florida also with a 9,000+ number after not reporting anything yesterday. Appears some other states with some lesser data dumps also.

I will say that the accuracy of the data continues to degrade in my estimation. Just way to much reporting based on data dumps with the consistency of data from day to day and week to week really starting to not make sense anymore. That is a problem.

Not even going start on the J&J pause as discussed in detail in other threads. My only hope is that after careful review today and tomorrow that they lift the J&J pause for men while they figure out what these non-menopausal women had in common. But they have to get J&J back in the fold for men to keep the vaccinations going considering zero men have had issues (and most likely shortly thereafter women over 50).

2.6M shots yesterday so total up to 194,792M with the 7 day rolling average at 3.34M. 77.6% of shots administered is the national average, 37.3% of population with 1+ dose (note this is percent of population that has been given 1 or 2 doses, so total percent that have been pricked by a needle), 23.1% fully vaccinated.
So far, 124 million Americans have received at least one dose of a vaccine. At least 76.7 million people have completed a vaccination regimen.

Doses delivered is 251.02M compared to yesterday 245.26M. So 5.7M doses delivered yesterday, 13.3M doses delivered for the week. Previous week totals for doses delivered is 29.9M, 28.22M, 23.8, 21.1M, 20.0M, 19.7M,21.2M, 5.1M, 9.96M and , 9.4M.

78,439 positives reported yesterday compared to 75,459 week over week. 7-day rolling average is at 72,688

Fatality was 915 compared to 819 yesterday and 928 week over week, 7-day rolling fatality at 746.

Looks like California had their data dump yesterday with fatalities as they put in 178 which is highest it has been in a long time. Michigan still leading the way on daily positives at 9349, followed by Florida at 6772 and NY at 6417 and PA at 6374. After that NJ, Illinois, and Texas all at 3500 so a pretty big drop-off after those top 4.

Not good news on the J&J front and you see it as well in the daily vaccine rate down from last week. Pause in J&J going to last at least until the end of April as they panel yesterday decided to continue the pause and review more data as it comes in putting out a call to all doctors if they have seen other blood clotting issues with J&J before making any decisions to see if the 6 reported are the only ones or there are more. They plan on reconvening end of next week.

Also nice to see CNN starting to push articles about all the cases of Covid that have been found in vaccinated people. Of course they play up the few people that were hospitalized and died and make a point to say in the article that 'this shows vaccines are not 100% effective". Of course, not sure any sane person would have ever thought that. Also gives zero explanation as to the hosptilized and people that died as in what condition they were in (ie...were they very sick old people in a nursing home). CNN is really starting to go way over the top with fear porn news and highlighting every that is not right and giving zero context, falsing misleading numbers, the article I read had 7% of people died in it which was complete mis-use of facts. The 7% value was 7% of the people that had been vaccinated and went to the hospital died. For the record, the article said 74 people (out of the 77M fully vaccinated) have died, so 1 in a million versus the 7% number they through out there.

With all the concern about vaccine equity, shutting down J&J due to a very rare scenario that is easily treatable is a real slap in the face to that effort.

actually the article I read pointed that out as a major reason that they did not just declare a complete stop to J&J as some doctors on the panel argued for that scenario of a complete halt to J&J. Appears some adults in the room pointed out that we are still talking 1 in a million scenario and that stopping J&J altogether is going to have a negative effect on many who are going to rely on a one shot, easy to refrigerate vaccine (like migrant works, homeless, extreme rural not to mention many other countries where J&J will end up being the main vaccine) and the bigger picture it would do more harm than good. So the compromise was continue the pause for another 7-10 days, make a call out to doctors to see if this is the only 6 or there are many more that just never got reported, and then re-evaluate once that data comes in.

I saw a paper that claimed that watching cable news for 30 minutes is the equivalent to smoking a cigarette, in the amount of time your life expectancy decreases. I think I saw that report on the news ;) Actually, I'm guessing that watching cable "news" really does decrease life expectancy with the amount of extra stress added. This has been going on since the start of written word, but has become an every second event now. Just listened to a podcast today about the fake news battles between Hearst and Pulitzer back in the days (centered on the sinking of the US Maine off of the coast of Havana and planting false stories to get the other paper to report it without fact checking). Nothing has changed except the timeframe of getting news weekly to daily to hourly to secondly

problem is before internet, it was contained to 30 minutes of National news on NBC/CBS/ABC which had some level of journalistic integrity (way more than cable news today). And a paper only had so many columns and words and only so much room on a front page. So were very limited on how much lying and fear porn they could actually spew.

Now with 24 hours per day and 7 days per week things are literally exponentially more crazy as people have to make up so much stuff just to fill the time.

I agree to some extent with this, but if you really watch them all, Fox is the only one that even attempts a little bit to give both sides. A lot of the main figures on Fox are liberals, there are exactly zero conservatives on the other networks. I would absolutely love to see a network that either just gave the news with no slant or presented both sides on every issue....of course that network would get shut down these days, but it’s nice to think about.

Tgar- you can laugh all you want, but I’m correct. But when you have nothing else, use an emoji.

At first glance, I thought it was a horrible decision to stop vaccinating. But I ran the numbers, and it really is a bad decision, but not so TERRIBLE as it seemed at first.

I mean, we know the fatality rate for Covid is about 1%. Just to be safe, let's say that the fatality rate is only 0.3%. Then, let's take a rolling two week delay, and the math then works out to be as follows: 7 million shots administered in a 6 week period, so round down to 1,000,000 shots per week.

Each day, 80,000/340,000,000 = 0.00024 probability of getting the CV if they're not vaccinated. So, rough math, we are infecting 0.00024*(1,000,000/7) = 34 new infections the first day because we stopped the vaccine. On the second day, we have a risk of 34 more infections, plus another 34 for those vaccinated the second day (is some midwit going to come on here and say - yeah, but the vaccine isn't effective immediately?). So, day 1 = 34 more infections, day 2 = 102 more infection, day 3 = 204, and after a week it's 238, and after 2 weeks, 3570 total new infections that we would not have otherwise had.

After two weeks of not vaccinating, an extra 3570 * 0.005 (fatality rate half percent) = 18 people dead that would otherwise not have been....ignoring minor effects like vaccine effectiveness and so forth.

Bottom line - seems hard to justify stopping.

Good maths there....thought there would be no maths!

But that is just one factor. Figure in hospitalizations and those costs. Plus the long term issues for some people. Adds in quite a bit more cost to delays.

But the biggest unknown cost is the fact that this delay plus the accompanying fear porn headlines all week will now scare away a substantial number of people that were on the fence about getting vaccinated. No way to know, could be one million, could five million that will now ‘ say screw it I ain’t taking it!’ Especially, and paradoxically, people with health issues that fear the shots could kill them or make them seriously ill.

Your points are right, but I ignore those impacts simply because someone can then start arguing that "it's just your opinion."

Some basic math is how you get past "Well, sources I trust on Fox or CNN tell me this, and I believe them".

If this discussion gets it nuked, then I don’t know what to say.
Agree with you on that. But as I recall, Rick Santorum, hardly a liberal, was a regular contributor on CNN. He generally came off as very reasonable.

will now sacre away a substantial number of people that were on the fence about getting vaccinated.

And those most likely targeted to get the J&J are the ones also most likely to say "screw it, I'm not getting it" with the delay and poor public health messaging

I’m not talking about contributors, I’m talking about hosts.

I don't mind the pause as they go get some more information. It appears that for men, there were zero so not sure why they did not just say we are allowing men to get it but are going to take a week to investigate the women more after the meeting. Plus it appears that when they do get this clot, the standard of typical treatment is not the right way to go and that they need to let doctors know what is the correct way to diagnose and treat if this does occur. But of course all you hear on TV is 6 women with blood clots due to vaccine. Which is going to drive more people to say 'see, exactly why I am not getting it' type of language.

They already released the triage/treatment guidance for anyone suspected of this kind of clot. The extended delay is just politics.

The shots can definitely make you ill....I just went through that the past two days....two brutal nights due to the vaccination.
