It's about now that I start looking at the ranks of the undefeated. All it means, sometimes, is that they haven't wrestled the best. Other times, they have and escaped unblemished.

125: The top 3, by most accounts, have separated themselves yet there are two others. Cardinale hasn't wrestled anyone near the top, and Mastrogiovanni only recently won in SV to Teske.
Nick Suriano
Pat Glory
Vito Arujau
Killian Cardinale
Trevor Mastrogiovanni (Lost 1/30/22)

133: Only two remain, both finalists from 2021.
Roman Bravo-Young
Daton Fix

141: Lee and Rivera, as many expected, are the two guys (along with one-loss Eierman) that appear to have separated themselves. Still, there are two other undefeateds. Real Woods is the real deal and Kizhan Clarke beat Chad Red in SV early in the season but has an overall underwhelming resume.
Nick Lee
Sebastian Rivera
Real Woods
Kizhan Clarke

149: Diakomihalis is on a class all his own.
Yianni Diakomihalis
Tariq Wilson
Josh Heil

157: Ryan Deakin and David Carr head this weight class.
Ryan Deakin
David Carr
Jacori Teemer

165: Solid weight class with overall with three undefeated guys, little separation. One's a freshman!
Evan Wick
Keeghan O'Toole
Dean Hamiti

174: Ditto 165 here, though Starocci's the man until beaten.
Carter Starocci
Hayden Hidley
Mehki Lewis

184: Finalists from 2021 only undefeateds here.
Aaron Brooks
Trent Hidlay

197: One remains.
A.J. Ferrari

285: Three remain, though one stands out. Hendrickson has had a fabulous season, but against mediocre competition, he's a dangerous pinner. Schultz too has wrestled a weak schedule.
Gable Steveson
Wyatt Hendrickson
Cohlton Schultz

That's a total of 29 28 and we can't end a season with more than 10. Even that is very unlikely. With three weeks of the regular season to wrestle, and 5 weeks to the post-season, it's shaping up to be a fun month and a half.

Great stuff. In case you’re not told enough, thanks for staying a part of the board here.

Mastrogiovanni just got beaten.

Cornell at Princeton next weekend: Arujau vs. Glory. Nobody ducking this one, as it's also for the Ivy League title.

Mastrogiovanni just lost at the Okie State v Iowa State dual. The original post reflects it.

Thanks for the info, I'm really lazy, but also, I don't have the time to look it up, but what number would be "normal" for a season and what would be the record for total number of undefeated wrestlers after NCAA's?

Hard to answer as stated. If you add the qualifier statement about having to wrestle in the NCAAs, then the max would be 10. Some wrestlers could win a few bouts, lose out in the room and not make the NCAAs and still be undefeated. In a "normal" season 3-6 undefeated.

2020: 6 (no NCAAs)
2019 (last "normal" year?): 4
2018: 3
2017: 5
2016: 4
2015: 4

Not counting anyone ranked outside the top ten.

There is no "normal" based on my research. The numbers vary wildly. I have the 2010-2017 data, here's the results from that 8-year period;

-- Average number of undefeateds heading into the tourney: 9
-- Average number of undefeateds after tourney: 4.5
-- So about half lose, on average
-- The highest number, by far, heading into NCAA's was 15 (2011, 10 lost at NCAA's)
-- The lowest number, by far, was 4 (2014, where DT was the lone remaining undefeated wrestler when the tournament was over)
-- The totals I have for these 8 years; 72 entered undefeated, 35 finished undefeated
-- The "mode" is 8 and 9 undefeateds going into NCAA's, 4 and 5 coming out

As a sidenote, with 28 current undefeateds, we will see many many fall in the next 5 weeks.

Willie said on TFW today that it doesnt sound good AJF coming back this season.

Also says that Ayala has a pec or labrum issue. Doesnt want to ask the family so as to not be that guy, but either of those injuries is floating around the intranet.

Wasn't Fast Twitch defeated by speed recently? Or maybe his own ego?

19 wrestlers still undefeated heading into conference tourneys. Two at 174 lost in the past 2 weeks, Hidlay and Lewis. Woods also lost at 141. Ferrari unbeaten, but crossed out as he will not wrestle in conference or NCAA tourneys.

There is only one case where two undefeated guys could face each other at their conference championship -- 141, Big Tens.
