My grandfather was a "doughboy" in WWI. He was shot AND gassed in France. He received a Purple Heart for leading a group of soldiers out of danger after being gassed and he being the only one with enough vision left to see. He had the men in line, each with their hand on the shoulder of the soldier in front of them led them to safety. Having learned this from family lore, I was able to confirm this talking to someone at the government who found the record of what happened and he read it to me over the phone. I asked to have a copy of the sheet but never received it.
