The Cleveland Guardians...

Honestly, Cleveland Crimson would be cool. Not sure if Harvard would take issue…

I know that they were looking into Spiders and Rockers but they were dealing with a lot of "squatters" who grabbed those domains and were asking $millions$ for the names.

Personally, I would have loved the "Steamers" name, but that wouldn't fly....

So Guardians are part of the Hope Bridge, named after the Hope family. Bob Hope's original vaudville act was in Blackface, until friends convinced him that he was funnier without it. So now Guardians are equated with racism?

Well bridges require math. Math is racist. So even if your version falls apart we are good.

Tom Hanks started his career in CLE doing shakespear at the Lakewook Ohio Beck Center for the Performing Arts and lived in the city for a short period of time. He has always spoken well of CLE and his time here.

The Guardians are a set of art deco "Guardians of Traffic" carved into the Hope Memorial Bridge. They were carved out, or at least managed, by Harry Hope who is the father of the famous actor and comedian Bob Hope who was born here.

I am not a fan of changing the name. In fact, the franchise signed an agreement with several native American tribes to keep the "Indians" name as long as they got rid of the Indian Chief Wahoo logo two years ago. Regardless, it is the best they could do. Spiders was a consideration but would have had some legal challenges. And "Guardians" is not that much different than "Indians" as the new logo suggests.

Just bring me a f**cking World Series in my lifetime. I’m forever scarred by ‘97 and ‘16.

I hate the direction the franchise is headed. Despite not having the trophy to show for it, the Indians have consistently, by far and away, been the best managed professional franchise in the state of Ohio. I don’t know what’s happening now though, and even still, they’re sitting a couple games over .500 after the break.

This would actually be very appropriate. Only those living on the Great Lakes can appreciate this though. Erie County residents only.

I do like it. It's real and meaningful. Highlights Lake Erie as a great environmental comeback story.

A cartoonish walleye superimposed on a block-letter "C" would look good.

We're grilling walleye tonite!

WFT is up next - hope they do better than 'Guardians'...
Let’s not get our hopes up. Whatever they choose will be pretty meh. I’m not quite a fan of the new Cleveland name and branding but it does have a strong connection to the city. They could have done a hell of a lot worse. Washington will not choose a name (like Senators or Nationals) associated with government. Once you eliminate such possibilities, what are you left with? Pandas? Another limitation is that it’s necessary to keep the burgundy and gold colors.

Didn't they name them the Indians because they had the first American Indian player?

23andMe canceled me. My family swears that my great great grandmother is from the Delaware tribe. My Mom has artifacts from her that kind of makes it look so. I did the DNA test along with my mother and 0% Indigenous American in my blood. 4% Italian that nobody knew about. Cancelled, so I no longer have a voice in the fight. But on a good note, I now have an urge to wrap a piano wire around the neck of a person in the front seat in a car while I'm in the back.
Meh. The Italians (Romans) ran Europe and the Middle East for 1,000 years. Anyone with European genes is some percent Italian.

My family has a large percentage of Swedish descent, but the DNA came back with Russian, Ukrainian, etc. That was interesting, though not surprising given how many of those tribes wandered 1,000 years ago.

Perhaps I’m old and cranky, but I think pretty much every new team name in the last 30 years or so has been mediocre. The Kraken and Golden Knights suck. The Pelicans are goofy.

The only one I like is the Thunder. Initially it sounded like a WNBA name, but it has grown on me.

Tigers, Lions, Bears, Eagles, Jets, Giants, Cowboys, Rams, Cardinals, etc. What the heck is so fantastic about the old names?

They are majestic beings or define a place well. Giants is a great name. Cowboys or Saints just fit their cities.

Ravens comes from Poe being buried in Baltimore. Blue Jackets have something to do with Ohio. The owner of the Golden Knights is a West Point grad. He couldn’t use black knights, so he used the Vegas gold color combined with Knights.

To me these, and probably others, have significance, which you are okay with in some cases apparently.

Forgot about them, agree that is a quality name.

I’m not saying your opinion is wrong. I’m just trying to enlighten you about some things maybe you didn’t know. Maybe it changes your mind. Probably not.

I believe I read somewhere that "Rockers" was internet squatted and the asking price was too high to free it up. Same with Spiders. They had a find a name that was free and clear of copyright and trademark and web domain conflicts.

The Washington Football Team is also going through that -- Monuments, Generals, Statesmen, Diplomats, and quite a few others have been squatted. My choice would be "Gridlocks" because it covers both legislation and traffic, and I live here.

Call them the Washington Hogs. (I’m serious.)

Certainly could have gone with Cleveland "Any Type of Music Qualifies for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame not Just Rock and Roll". Might be a bit too long though, but guessing it wasn't internet squatted

Unemployment Up 800% Among Ethnic Mascots

July 23rd, 2021 - BabylonBee.com

article-9113-1.jpg

U.S.—The new unemployment numbers are out, and they're pretty discouraging: among ethnic mascots of baseball teams and corporate brands, unemployment has skyrocketed 800% in the past year.

"These are troubling signs for the BIPOC mascot community," said leading economist Dr. Matais Zendejas. "We had made so much progress, with mascots of all ethnicities being welcomed by the American public. But now it seems they are being fired at record rates, with the mascots and brand icons being replaced by genderless, white, inoffensive mascots, or else by nothing at all."

"It's really not a good time to be a mascot of color. The unemployment crisis is affecting mascots of color disproportionately. It's racism, plain and simple."

According to one source, the Land O'Lakes Native American girl, once a shining star of the margarine world, has been reduced to asking for change outside a Whataburger in Texas. "Yeah, me and Apu here take turns working the corner," she said, munching on some fries a compassionate customer had given her. "It ain't much, but it pays the bills. Well, actually, it doesn't. But I don't have many bills, because I'm homeless now."

Having fallen on hard times, Chief Wahoo, formerly of the Cleveland Indians, managed to find work singing old Sinatra tunes for tips at a local casino.

I heard Golden State was updating their name to the SJ Warriors. The mascot will now be a 4'11" rainbow haired non-binary pansexual individual. Everytime there is a foul, ze/they will get in the offender's face and demand they acknowledge their privilege and atone for their position in the patriarchy that oppresses marginalized groups.

There is a simple solution to all those who are offended by some team names. Eliminate team names altogether. Simply refer to the team's as the Pittsburgh Baseball team, the Philadelphia Hockey Club, the Atlanta Basketball team....etc. etc.

What about towns that have two teams in the same sport? NY or LA for example. The NY Baseball team #1 and the NY Baseball team #2?

I think that may be too controversial. Some fans may not want to settle for #2. How about New York/ Bronx Baseball team and New York/Queens Baseball team.
