SportsIllustrated: Big Ten, Pac 12 and ACC in talks to create "alliance"

How would the big ten be diluting their brand? The ACC and PAC12 are iconic P5 conferences. It’s not like an alliance with MAC and Patriot League.
And the Big10 sucks…when I was at Dear Ole’ State in the 80’s we used to laugh at the Big10 and their dismal bowl record and annual AW in the Rose Bowl.

O$U has gotten much better (and Penn State worse) , but overall Big10 football still sucks.

You are clueless. The SEC is certainly considered a stronger football conference (based upon the top teams), but the Big Ten has the most lucrative TV deal and is right behind the SEC and far above all other conferences.

Do TV deals mean good football? Check the records from on the field of play. Other than O$U, what Big10 teams strike fear into anyone? Have good bowl records or even good out of conference records against teams with a pulse? None. Even O$U has struggled at times. Hopefully PSU can return to where we were b4 the Big10…preferably outside the B10.

The ACC is under contract with ESPN until 2035 but the boys in Bristol are just going to give them more money, particularly when it's questionable if ACCNet ever gets more than two feet off the ground.

Well, the "boys in Bristol" aren't giving them ENOUGH money. This year (2021) is their look-in year. Other than their annual escalator, they aren't getting jack squat, and are EXTREMELY unhappy campers. Clemson, North Carolina, and Virginia are leading the ACC charge with their ADs representing the conference in this alliance. As you imply, their GOR handcuffs them until 2035, which leads them to look for alternatives.

You can kiss this 12 team, SEC/ESPN stacked deck Playoff proposal goodbye. Only one vote is needed to kill the plan. Now we have at least three from three of the four movers and shakers ( the Big 12 is on life support). Lots of leverage can be used. Look for the Rose Bowl to become a major player in this thing. September will be VERY interesting.

By your measure, only Bama, Clemson, tOSU, Oklahoma, and Georgia are relevant. You said the big ten sucks. The reality is that they are at worst, the second best conference in the country.

Unfortunately, that’s pretty much the case in the current set up.

Those 5 schools are who’s relevant and you see that in the 4 playoff selections every year- Bama, Clemson, Ohio State + 1 other. You can add any SEC (or ND) ‘1 hit wonder’ type team to the list too. So the LSU, Auburn types who have a breakout year or 2 but not at the same consistent level as Bama. Thats pretty much it.

I agree the big ten is the second best conference, but when compared with the ACC and PAC 12 it’s sort of like bragging about being the tallest midget. ;)

The SEC is way ahead of the rest, (including the big ten), in terms of quality and depth.

Rather than simply combining the Big, PAC, and ACC it would be much better to cherry pick the best teams in each and make them into a new conference. The problem with a simple combining of the 3 conferences is that the bottom feeders come along for the ride. They will add little to the new conference while sapping money. Teams like Wake Forest, Arizona, pitt, NC State, etc. will just be a drain on the new conference. The Big would entice Clemson, USC, Stanford, Oregon, Florida State, etc. to join the Big while eliminating Rutgers, Maryland, and Illinois. The resulting conference would be on par or even better than the SEC.
Why in the world would Clemson or FSU want to join the big ten? They could get similar money from the SEC along with lower academic standards and have an easier time recruiting to the SEC versus the big ten. The Big Ten should be looking at PAC teams and of course ND if that's even possible - these share similar academic standards and have some history together. If we get anything from the ACC, it will be Louisville, WV, Pitt, etc.

"Academic standards" is a red herring. Follow the money. After the next contract I'd be willing to bet it favors the SEC.
