I think you still get good money for them it’s just that they are a ripoff at purchase.

Perhaps they are then good values to buy as 5 year old used cars

They're not produced in limited numbers and a large number of them are leased. They're also in a segment where a premium is placed on technology and at the rate technology is advancing a lot of the advanced features on a 5 year old bmw or merc that justified the price when new are common/obsolete/or too expensive to maintain out of warranty.
