1. Wallace finally got benched, in favor of Effner. At least that's how I saw it at the time, but Franklin said after the game that they had planned to substitute on the OL. Wallace proved once again to everyone watching the game that he is not a B10 OT. Some say he would be a good Guard, but I don't see that either. But for the sake of this season Wallace needs to be replaced at Right OT. The options seem to be benching him in favor of Effner, or moving Tengwell out the Right OT and then letting Wallace try and find playing time at Guard competing against Wormley and Nourzad. Or is the true freshman Shelton good enough to get practicing full time at Right OT and then throw in at Right OR when he has reportedly been practicing as the back up at Left OT behind Fashanu?
** Could someone in the media have the stones to ask Franklin on Tuesday what he plans to do to fix the turnstile at Right OT????
2. The young players at Safety got a good taste of competing against a good team in a hostile environment and came away more ready to compete and make plays for the remainder of the season. Wheatley made a key play when he caused the fumble that was recovered by Porter, and seemed to get on the field regularly. Same for Reed at Safety.
3. The CB's all seemed to play pretty well. Hardy made some great plays but on the key play where he caught up to knock the ball away it was only because the Purdue WR's were pretty slow that allowed him to recover. He won't be able to do that against UM or oh-high-ya so there are lessons to learn from this game. Wish they would learn to eliminate the after the play showboating and let their play speak for itself......
4. The young DE's got plenty of playing time but had limited success in their pass rush which will get them more acclimated to what it takes to make plays in the B10. Chop played a ton and looked decent but didn't get a sack and had only 1 tackle according to the stats on my CBS Sports app. DDS got some snaps but didn't seem to make an impact. I thought Vanover #56? looked athletic and moved very well, more like a LB than a DE considering his listed size. Also great that Mustipher seemed to play pretty well in his return from injury.
5. Allar got his feet wet. If the team can get a comfortable lead this coming week he should get another couple of series of experience.
6. Both Singleton and Allen got their share of carries and should build on that going forward. After some initial spurts Singleton got tackled in the backfield too many times. The oline needs to step up and get better as this season moves along, but we have been hoping for that for too many years........
7. Strange make a highlight play for his TD, and Warren played well as well. TE really should be a strength this season. But where was Johnson and is he hurt or just in the dog house? Another question for Tuesday.
8. Special teams performed very well. KO's were in the end zone for the most part by both kickers, the punting was pretty good, and the kick coverage looked pretty good as well.
I was hoping that a big positive would be that a couple of 2nd team WR's stepped up and made catches to show that PSU has great depth at WR, but I don't remember that happening. Wallace was targeted twice according to the game stats but didn't have a catch. Where were Meiga and Saunders, or Dottin? Great the KLS make a big play for a TD and we have to hope that is how he'll play going forward, as apposed to the 3 blatant drops that led to his 4 catches in 9 targets.
About the same for the LB's. Elsdon looked slow in coverage, Sutherland was all over the field but I can't remember him making any splash plays (he was credited with 2 tackles), and Jacobs was solid. A shame Carter got ejected but that's the new college football. I thought he led with his shoulder, but there was head to head contact and the whistle had blown even thought the Purdue player was scrambling to pick up the ball. Carter likely will get lots of PT this coming week and may grow into an impact player as the season goes along.
Anything to add??
