Listened to XM radio and the college sports station had someone rank the best conference divisions between the ACC/SEC/BIG. ACC Atlantic is the best (Clemson/FSU/Louisville) out of the 6 divisions but his next comment was basically this: "while everyone claims the ACC was the best conference last year, its solely based off of the Atlantic division as the Coastal division is the worst of the 6 divisions" Claimed that Duke had a better chance of winning the division than Pit.
B1G and ACC are very similar in their makeups when you look at divisional depth.
I think the argument could be made that the ACC Atlantic and B1G East are equally heavy in the top 3. I'd be fine saying (FSU + Clemson) > (OSU + PSU), but would give Michigan an edge over Louisville.
I'd take the B1G East's depth in the middle over ACC Atlantic depth though. NC State is a promising team but big dropoff from them to Cuse and BC. Counter that with MSU, Indiana and Maryland....think the edge goes to B1G.
Of course, Rutgers has a depth of ineptitude though that no one in the ACC can match, which brings down the whole division.
Meanwhile, the B1G West vs. ACC Coastal would present similar parity in matchups. On paper right now you'd have a very thin top with Wisky v. Miami and everyone else below them.
There's really no pecking order in the next tier teams on the B1G West side with Iowa, NW, Nebraska...followed by Minnesota a notch below. Purdue and Illinois are junk. The ACC Coastal has similar parity outside the top with UVA bringing up the basement. Between UNC, VT, GT, Pitt and Duke, any one of those teams could finish 2nd and any one could finish 6th.
Parity in football is a good thing and main reason why I think the SEC is trending down.
