Penn State football had three freshman earn All-America honors

Another postseason honor has come in for Penn State football. This time, three freshmen Nittany Lions have been recognized. Tight end Pat Freiermuth, wide receiver KJ Hamler, and linebacker Micah Parsons have all been named to The Athletic Freshman All-America Team after putting up strong seasons in their first year on the field.

Penn State placed more players on the list than any other school.

Freiermuth, a true freshman, enjoyed a breakout campaign in his first season with the Nittany Lions. He quickly emerged as the best Nittany Lion tight end and became a reliable target for quarterback Trace McSorley. Freiermuth led Penn State during the regular season with seven touchdown catches.

That number of scoring catches was good enough for sixth overall in the Big Ten and second nationally among all tight ends.

Joining Freiermuth with a breakout season on offense was Hamler. The redshirt freshman showed that his speed was a dangerous weapon and became a legitimate deep threat for the Nittany Lions.

Hamler is especially dangerous because of his versatility. His performance on special teams is what landed him on the All-America list. He racked up a total of 589 return yards and set up numerous Penn State drives with good field position.

Like his fellow freshman counterpart, Micah Parsons had a big year for the Nittany Lions. The five-star recruit showed why he was one of the biggest prizes of the 2018 recruiting class. Parsons made a team-high 69 tackles in the regular season, four of which went for a loss.

With the emergence of Parsons, “Linebacker U” is alive and well.

Penn State leads the list with three selections, and Alabama, Clemson and Syracuse each have two. Because of a surplus of talent at linebacker, the All-Freshman team features a 3-4 alignment on defense, so to speak.

QB Trevor Lawrence, Clemson: After he enrolled early, Lawrence’s ascension to the starting quarterback job felt inevitable, despite the return of starter Kelly Bryant. Lawrence played in the first four games before winning the job outright, which led to Bryant utilizing the redshirt rule to transfer. Lawrence got knocked out of his first start against Syracuse but returned to lead the...
