This IS THE problem offensively. Hearing Matt Mcgloin explained it on his podcast tonight. Too much thinking. Asking Clifford to make throws he can't make. Running too many long crossing routes. Making Cliff think instead of just play. Matt said they need to shorten the plays to the ones Cliff is comfortable with so he can just go play fast and not try to be something he isn't. Run the same concepts but with different formations, window dressing, give a defense a different look...

Right now you throw a deep fade on third down, you run a 4th and 6 with an impossible cross field NFL out throw to the opposite boundaries, on and on.

I'll say it again, one of Franklin's big hangups for success against good teams is he tries to perfect what he thinks will work against the other team instead of perfecting what his team does well. It's a major philosophical problem.
You need to perfect what you do and who you are not try to fabricate something you think may or may not work based on what you see from your opponent....You need to add a few wrinkles to who you are for an opponent not create an entire plan of wrinkles.

This IS THE problem offensively.
The problem on offense is we have an offensive coordinator who shares the same philosophy of James Franklin and has proven incapable of adjusting his offensive philosophy (inherited from Mike Gundy) which was perfected in the no-defense Big XII Conference to match the talent on hand. On defense, Franklin is unrealistic and we have had so many whiffs on the recruiting trail we are left with a roster of players in the front seven that are significantly undersized.

1. We run a spread gap blocking scheme. The upperclassmen were all recruited an developed to run JoeMo's MAP hybrid leaving us with a roster of square pegs for round holes. Big strong man blocking linemen have a history of struggling to adapt to this type of blocking scheme. See Michigan under Rich Rodriguez, Michigan State under John L Smith, Nebraska under Mike Riley etc.
2. We run a passing scheme predicated on facing 5 man fronts. One, we don't have the receivers to do this. We haven't had a legit #1 for this type of offense since Chris Godwin. None currently exist on the roster. Even if he did, Clifford is not the type of QB needed to run this offense, Allar is. I am not calling for Allar to get thrown into this mess of an offense against top defenses for fear of Franklin ruining another five star QB's career like he did with Hackenberg who was less developed when he departed Happy Valley then when he arrived. That takes a special kind of incompetence.
3. We run a rigid and uber aggressive 4-3 defense. We have 3-4 talent up front due to years of failures on the recruiting trail. We should have PJ in as a 0/1 nose tackle flanked by Izzard and Ellies as the starting front with Beamon coming in on passing downs. Isaac and Robinson should be playing outside linebacker with Jacobs and Abdul in the middle.

I can keep going. There are many other issues with this team. Again, no team is perfect but Franklin's hiring practices and overarching philosophy need to change.

You also coordinators that can adjust the offense and defense, especially in the portal era.

Outstanding post and hope everyone reads it and absorbs what is being said. Problem is it won’t change because he can’t change. He’s a classic narcissist. Krafty is watching and will deliver the death blow if the next two weeks performances are anywhere close to yesterday. Remember homecoming is this weekend and the money will be in town meeting with each other. Should be interesting.

If Allar is going to be the guy, then you need to start him now. You can't throw that kid to the wolves when Ohio st comes calling...

He is a classic narcissist. He lacks accountability for his actions. That has been apparent for years. But, he isn't going anywhere. As a couple of the pro-Franklin trolls like to point out, 10 more years! Franklin's contract is going to be every bit as destructive to the athletic department as Cal's stadium deal. Both were driven by Sandy. Franklin didn't earn the prior extension and should have been allowed to walk away (if he could have) or fired after last year, not given a raise and extension. Now we are stuck with him for at least five more years, unless Kraft takes drastic actions to force Franklin to leave on his own.
