I’ve lived in four different areas of PA, currently live south of Pittsburgh but working in Williamsport. Billtown sub shops are by far the best anywhere. I personally think it’s the local bakeries as the hoagie rolls here are the gold standard. Worst sub shops in my opinion are Subways as their bread tastes like cardboard totally lacking character. Man do those pics make me hungry.

There are 4 top notch sub shops in Newberry alone. Even the pizza places like Venice make better hoagies and cosmos than anyone around the state.
 
Newberry subs for the win!!! Although that looks pretty good. Mom Mileto would be rolling in the grave knowing I say that. My sister worked there in high school.
Hah! Back in the 80's Miletos had another shop - across River Ave. from Faxon Lanes. Where I was introduced to the CB Cosmo. An ongoing love affair.

Newberry Reg. sub are the best. But Joey's Place on Washington Blvd. was the place to go for a Cheesesteak in the garden not so much anymore.

Newberry Subshop has been the standard for the last 20 yrs or so. Since Kristi Marshall started running Miletos though, and advertising 1lb of beef on every cheesesteak, I couldnt say that Newberry's are still better. I liked Joey's but IMO they were never as good as Newberry Subshop's. Lycoming Bakery rolls do make Williamsports subs much better. I never tried Caris. I had to look it up to see where it was.

This is great, and I had no idea Williamsport and surrounding areas was such a hoagie Mecca. I’m from the coal region, and we also revere our hoagie shops, but it’s nothing like this.

Dumb question, what exactly is the definition of a cosmo vs. a regular hoagie?

Cosmos are put under the broiler and toasted.

The Cosmo was created at the old Cellini's on Cemetery St. A Cosmo is placed under the broiler at some point and toasted/melted. It began as just melted cheese on a roll w/ all the fixings. It was originally a Friday alternative for Catholics, then they began adding meat during the rest of the week. Ham and Canadian Bacon are probably the most popular Cosmos and every sub shop in town offers them.

Thanks I missed that. I believe that’s what they would call a grinder in New England. Good sandwich. There was a place on the West Chester Pike in Upper Darby years ago called Toasted Oven Grinders that was pretty good.

And here I thought that Cosmos were created in the Johnston Commons dining hall.;) The chicken cosmos were one of the few edible items they produced. We would pile a bunch in our backpacks on chicken cosmo day.

How so? Do you have an approximate date of conception? I worked at the Train Station and it's hoagie shop called the Cattle Car in State College back in the early 1970's and they were serving "Cosmos" back then... who knows how much earlier??? I'm not saying Chuck Herlocker invented the "Cosmo" style... but merely pointing out that this particular gastronomic nomenclature and culinary technique has been fairly widespread for years, but I had never heard about where it was "invented." Thanks for any further information.
 
Gotta visit the Williamsport area sometime soon. If those sandwiches are half as good as they look, it'll be worth it. I live just outside of Reading and I always thought we had great stuff here. We got nothing that looks that good.
