OT: In no surprise Dustin Johnson chases Saudi cash

I don't hold any ill will towards any golfers moving to LIV tour. Just don't give me a sob story. And I think the smear campaign by the PGA didn't do them any good and backfired some. PGA now has competition, they will change or they will get beat by LIV and become a minor tour.
Agreed, the LIV guys need to just say it's for the money and nothing else. Reed is a hypocrite. No one outside of Sungjae Im has played more PGA events than Reed over the past 6-7 years. The 5 seasons before covid he averaged 31 tournaments a year. He wasn't too concerned about family time back then.

I can understand the travel complaints. Golf is year round unlike other major sports. And those sports have home games half of the time. I especially understand it for the Australasians like Matsuyama and cam Smith. The pga tour is on the other side of the world. Its not like taking a couple hour flight to get home.

It’s also game on four days a week (assuming one makes the cut) plus a practice round on Wed. Not much travel time to get home. Which why many of top guys are pilots and eithe own their own private jets or have used of a sponsor’s corporate jet.

The problem with the LIV Tour is that, at the rates it is paying the players, it has no potential to be profitable. Golf just doesn't draw big ratings. The majors, of course, have the highest ratings but almost certainly those 4 tournaments couldn't support the money that is being paid out by LIV. Thus, the most likely scenario is that the Saudis will milk the LIV for its sportswashing benefit and just walk away when that goes away. Additionally, it should be noted that golf is not a major sport in Saudi Arabia -- there is no motivation to grow the game and assist young players.

I am OK with some players taking the big money and running, so long as they admit they have no concern with the general health of the game; they are merely looking out for No. 1.

The only reason that LIV would draw any ratings at all would be because of players its having players who have won a major or multiple majors. These majors are the result of people committed to golf managing them, and those people trying to make sure that the events are profitable and financially sustainable.

The problem with LIV aside from the real dirty cash, dirtier than most other cash, is that nobody cares. I know a lot about golf, I've been in and around the business for 25+ years. Nobody gives a crap about a LIV tournament. And yes, a LIV event is a tournament, not a championship and there is a huge difference. If you asked when LIV last played, where they played, who played and who won, I couldn't give you a decent answer except I did catch a headline that I think Charl Schwatzel won one of the tourneys but that's all I know. This will eventually be it's demise. If it can't capture the imagination of those who love to play and watch golf, it is inventible it will die. If the golf population at large doesn't pickup more interest it just won't work.
Many of the players will come away set for life, if they weren't already, but at what cost to overall health of high level championship golf and did it really change their life? These guys already travel to the best spots on a private jet with a team of support people, how is LIV changing that? Let's face it LIV isn't a series of championship competitions, it's a small invitational skins game, like casino's put on for high rollers at Shadow Creek or Cascata. Sorry just not interesting, not my fault, their fault for lack of imagination.
Greg Norman would sell his first born if meant a new branding opportunity.
If it was all about watching who won the money the most important stroke would be the guy who has a 4 footer to determine if he gets 2nd place money of falls back into the 4 way tie for 3rd, but that's not how this works, even though that uninteresting final putt was worth 280 thousand dollars. The trophy is the draw for public at large, not the big fake check at the end. They handed Cam Smith the Claret Jug not the big fake check and that's why everyone was watching.

With all due respect that is nonsense. Quick, Who won the Valspar Chamoionship? You can't compare the 4 majors with the LIV events OR ANY OTHER PGA event. If you are a casual golf watcher no event save the majors holds your interest. Maybe there are one or two people you root for. In that case you watch them whether an LIV or a PGA event. If you are a hard core watcher you enjoy watching either event.
Regarding the LIV events
. i love the shotgun start - can't do it with a big field but I like everyone playing under the same conditions
. I like the team play concept. They have work to do to raise the interest level but they can figure it out. They have played 2 events. Give it a chance. Look at the Fed Ex cup. They continue to tinker with it to make it interesting and how long has it been around 10+ years? Even the Ryder Cup was largely uninteresting until the 90's.
I agree the economics just don't make sense. If they fold so be it. The PGA tour would be silly not to welcome these guys back.
I am not a fan of Norman however
"Norman would sell his soul for a branding opportunity" and yet we watch each week guys with 2 logos on their shirt, and others on their cap, ball, bag etc.
"Faldo called it an exhibition" well. Tiger called the Ryder Cup an exhibition and it is IMO even more exciting than even the majors.

My point is that the PGA tour serves as a foundation for the major tournaments, among other things the qualifying records of those who are permitted to enter or who get automatic exemptions into the opens. Even the nationally insignificant events like valspar, do have local support year to year. Also there are a fair amount of non majors that have a good amount of interest such as Jack nicklaus's memorial tournament and the Pebble Beach tournament.

The Ryder cup may be an exhibition but it only happens every 2 years and obviously draws enormous interest because of its historical background. The LIV tournaments are week to week (or several weeks) exhibitions similar to AAU basketball games. It just so happens that the Saudis with a huge amount of money and not being constrained by real economics are happy to temporarily use pro golfers to sportswash their regime. Not good for the long-term health of pro golf or golf generally.

These guys leaving for the LIV don't need to justify it to anyone. It is there prerogative to do it. Phil Mickelson is not going to admit he hates the PGA, has an ax to grind with them and has jumped to the LIV for the dough. Not sure what the media wants from the guy at this point....Phil just please rip the PGA so we can lambast you through every media outlet more than what we already have because we need new content and clicks. If you leave a company because the senior leadership sucks and you hate your boss are you really going to tell them that in an exit interview? I guess you could but the smart thing to do is respectfully thank them and move on.. Last point, the PGA is involved with China so they are not as pure as the driven snow and someone shut Rory McIlroy the hell up. He should just concentrate on not choking away tournaments.

Henrik Stenson was just stripped of his Ryder Cup captaincy.

I agree with you. These guys are free agents. it isn't like there is a league resembling the NFL or NBA. In addition, the media has been mostly silent on the NBA's issues with China and their human rights issues. I find the whole thing to be a bit hypocritical. It is now a world economy. I deal with employees of smaller companies all over the world: Japan, Brazil, Ukraine, India, UK, etc.). Why would we expect the non-USA players to be loyal to the PGA? They are here to make money, not for the red, white, and blue. Most of the USA players are on the downside of their careers. Even if they are not, if someone offers me $100m guaranteed, they have my attention.

Well we will agree to disagree. What specifically is the difference between an LIV event and any golf event except the majors? 3 rounds instead of 4? Trying to compare a 2 week old event with tournaments that have been around for 40 years is silly. I only used the Tiger and Faldo comments because the term exhibition was a pejorative.
Help me understand whose hearts and minds will be changed by sportswashing and why do they want to change our minds?
So we will like them? They hate us why do they care if we like them.
So we will buy more oil? uh no that sure isn't it
What percent of the general public watches golf? Of that small subset who has heard of the LIV tour? Even if the LIV tour were to be successful would that really change anything?
They hate our way of life, we largely hate theirs. We need oil to maintain ours and they need to sell us oil to maintain theirs. We will continue this relationship for the foreseeable future

I have never understood the hate against Mickelson. Lots of people and corporations take dirty money. It is part of doing business a lot of times. He is no different than millions if not tens of millions of people.

I would guess that once you are paid and invited to join the LIV tour that there are no continuing qualifications based upon your record of play. For instance, Bubba Watson currently ranks something like 85th in the world. That keeps him out of some of the higher prestige tournaments which only take the top 60 ranked players in the world. There is no emphasis on excellence on the LIV tour because the sponsors don't care about golf at all. It is very hard to stay on top and stay qualified for all the best events on the PGA tour because there is such a high level of competition and the high level of skills.

A huge aspect of this that I have yet see addressed is how is the PGA reacting behind the scenes. Their sponsors and tv networks have to be very nervous. People come out to events to see the stars including ones past their prime. Same with TV ratings. With many of the big names jumping ship and Tiger being a big nothing burger they have to be very concerned.

Are they talking about renegotiating terms? Are they looking for ways to compensate? Or ways to improve the game or coverage? When do the the rights expire and how will this affect negotiations? Will fewer events be televised?

Sure new stars will develop over time. But the naysayers will say that the new guys are winning because of weakened competition. And will any have the personality needed to be super stars?

Edit: Should have emphasized what will ratings do and what happens if they fall? Which methinks is inevitable without Tiger and most big names.

all good points.

I think the PGA made a big mistake by giving LIV air and making a big deal about it.

Many of the world's best players play on the European Tour so what is the big difference? I am talking about guys like Colin Montgomery, Sergio Garcia, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, etc. They come over, play in a handful of events, hit the majors and go back to Europe.

it is hard to imagine that LIV will be a career-building tour for younger, emerging players. Of the top ten in FedEx cup standings, only one has defected (Aussie, Cameron Smith). If you take a look at the top 30, I don't see any others defecting. Dustin Johnson is the only real US big name who is in the prime of his career.

..and, I can certainly see bringing in the middle east is a great way to grow the game worldwide. Sports have long been a way to build relationships (soccer, Olympics, etc.). In fact, Golf has just recently become an Olympic sport (16 & 20).

PGA should have not made a big deal of this, positioned themselves as the pinnacle of world golf excellence (if you aren't playing on the PGA Tour, you aren't playing the world's best golf competition) and let them go. I would cut them off of PGA events (FedEx, Ryder. President's Cup) and if they want to go, go.

I haven't looked up the numbers, but I think the tour has already experienced the post-Tiger drop. He has two wins since 2013, and a lot of time away in the last decade or so. Whatever viewers were there for TW haven't been there much because he hasn't. Phil used to move the needle, but that too has faded as his ability to contend has diminished, and I don't see the guys who left for LIV as being the types that drew fans on their own. If you're a big enough golf geek to be a DJ fan, you're probably still going to watch the PGA. The bigger issue with ratings may be the popularity of the sport itself and changing viewing habits of the prospective audience.

Spot on! Some folks forget this is what they do to make a living. I said earlier in the thread. If a competitor offered you

. a signing bonus equal to your last 10 years of pay
. double your salary
. 4 times as much vacation
. 25% less hours
. to do the very same job

Would you take it?

If you didn't you would be crazy.

I agree and again there is the hypocrisy. I was always a big Phil fan but when he ran after the ball and hit it while it was still rolling [in a major by the way] he lost a lot of my respect.

We are two weeks in for crying out loud. Whose to stay the LIV won't have qualifying events as well.
It is hard to do shotgun starts or even 2 [one a.m and one pm] unless you keep your field relatively small.

Good points. Koepka and BDC have both been injured and it will be interesting to see how they come back from their violent games.

last year, the Fedex cup finished the regular season like this:
  1. Morikawa
  2. Speith
  3. Cantlay
  4. English
  5. Rahm
  6. Ancer
  7. BDC
  8. Oosthuizen
  9. JT
  10. Burns
Interestingly, the number of events was between 24 (cancer) and 19 (BDC and Oosth)
It finished as
  1. Cantlay
  2. Rahm
  3. Na
  4. JT
  5. Hovland
  6. Xander
  7. BDC
  8. DJ
  9. Ancer
  10. Horschel
The red are now LIV players. Just a quick look so I could be wrong.

Honestly, to me, I am not tuning in to watch BDC or DJ or Na. I think BDC has the most personality but I won't miss him. Looks like quite a turnover to newer players. This year, Scheffler is running away and hiding in terms of FedEx points so far.

All LIV need is a TV contract and Charles Barkley. They just picked up David Feherty. I'm watching this carefully.

My company once lost a big deal because my CEO was a really wealthy guy. He was great when you sided with him but don't be on the wrong side. We inquired why we lost the deal and the message back was "our CEO thinks your CEO has **** You money. His policy is never deal with someone that has **** You money".

Looks like the PGA messed with someone that had more **** You money than they did.

Brandel chamblee is a joke and has always been a joke. Who would ever listen to that guy.

I agree he drones on and likes to hear himself talk. He's lucky he has that gig because he did nothing as a professional so I'm sure he needs the dough. You would think the Golf Network could get a guy at least a little more accomplished as a player to be their lead analyst.

Everyone has morals until they are actually in a situation.

Everyone flipped out about steroids in the late 90's in baseball. How could they, cheaters.....and I'm not even talking about the Sosa's and Big Mac's. But what if you are in the bus leagues but taking a needle will get you to the bigs, which comes with the major league pension???? What would you do in that situation?

Me personally, I'd stick the nedle in my eye ball.

he's got great hair.

The Golf Channel has screwed up so much coverage over the years, and today is no exception. Here we have the highest ranked player in the field Tony Finau, and they leave coverage at 6 for Golf Central with Tony on 15 and 2 shots out of the lead. Terrible look for the Tour with all the LIV stuff going on. You're the Golf Channel, show us golf! I don't need to see Jim Gallagher Jr breaking down the the women's event in France when Tony is putting for birdie on 16....rant over!

Wonder why Tiger turned it down. I know Tiger is plenty rich, but $750M is 'wow' level money. Guesstimate via google of Tiger net worth is a billion dollars so money he has. But basically doubling your net worth with going on the LIV tour. Love to hear an interview with Tiger on the reasons he said no.

He turned it down for very good reasons. He is strongly supporting the PGA in its suspending LIV players. If many of the top players get suspended it will be a little easier for him to get a few more majors. And finally pass Jack.

I doubt that was the main reason. The PGA Tour is not involved with any of the 4 majors. Augusta National is not going to decline any player who is qualified. Nine of the past 19 Masters champions are now in Liv Golf. That would be a terrible look for the tournament.

Tiger only wants to play a few times a year. Not sure how he could commit to a 14 tournament schedule next year on the Liv Tour.

Never say never when it comes to the Masters. They do what they want without regard to what anyone thinks.

Exactly. If you believe what came out in the quest for a temporary injunction is that Phil was suspended in March and then didn't play in the Masters or the PGA. Seems like the Majors are connected to the tour to me. I believe that they will honor the suspensions that might be in place.

Also cannot believe that The Masters is real big on the LIV tour either.

So I thought I saw some announcement from the PGA on things they are doing, more 'premiere' tour events with bigger purses. And then Tiger and Rory announcing some team play contests?
