Hoping somebody can help. My wife and I recently purchased a home that came with a pool but no heater. Our pool company had installed a 250000 BTU natural gas heater in 2005 but no heater was in place when we bought the home. We therefore purchased a new 250k BTU natural gas heater and had it installed last week. Here's my dilemma:

After getting the heater installed we had a certified gas technician come out to hook up the gas. The technician informed us that our inground line (same line used on the previous heater) is only rated 150000 BTUs. But again, the previous heater was confirmed by the pool company to have been 250000 BTUs (??)

My question for anyone who knows is: is it safe to run the new heater off this existing 150000 BTU line? If yes, what is the downside?

Alternatively I was told we could get a new gas regulator (expensive) or rip up and replace the old gas line (very expensive). Thoughts or suggestions? Thank you.
