Tournament is this Saturday and Sunday at Council Rock South HS in Holland, PA. Come out and see us, but if you can't we will be streamed live on FLO. All 8 mats, all weekend. Brackets are live on Flo Arena.

Richard Perry will be attending the tournament on Sunday and will present our trophies. We are selling t-shirts and raffling off items - including a pair of wrestling shoes signed by David Taylor and a pair of NCAA tickets - to benefit the Perry family.

We had a couple of notable scratches already (every tournament does). No Kurt McHenry - he is finished with his studies and will not be competing in HS anymore. Guida will drop down from 120 to take his spot for St. Paul's (probably his more naturaly weight anyway). Nicky Raimo and Devon Britton are also sidelined.

Dice-Awesome event, incredibly well run, always exciting and I love to come watch it every year.

Obviously I am asking for speculation but regarding McHenry, is this the equivalent of top D1 football recruits graduating mid year and starting college in January to attend spring practice and get a jump on their peers? Any mention of him heading to another room to train? It could be me but I don't recall seeing someone this elite stop competing (unless injured) mid year in high school.

My guess is he's hitting the weights hard. Wolverine Weight Job?

Thanks for the compliment - we all appreciate it.

In regards to McHenry, yes that is my understanding. 3rd party, was relayed a conversation in regards to our event which was subsequently confirmed at registration. My understanding of it was that it is the situation you outlined above, but have no details and I haven't talked to the parties directly.

But, yes, kid graduating early and getting a jump on his college start seems to be the gist of it.

Hey Dice....I would appreciate your thoughts on Biscoe after you watch. Compare some notes.

I think he has more potential than younger Lane at the next level.

I'll get a chance to see him in some very good matches this weekend right from the start. I like his potential as well, he is a dangerous #10 seed - but he couldn't be seeded any higher as there are a lot of veterans with hardware ahead of him and he is early in his career. I'll let you know my thoughts.

BTW, it is kind of an oxymoron to put "younger" and Lane in the same sentence, lol.

For those of you who will be attending, because of the weather situation we have accelerated our Sunday schedule. Expect Semis to start around 10am and finals around 12:30. Trying to get everyone out of the gym as early as possible.

For the rest of you, hit the FLO app on your Roku and enjoy some fine wrestling on the big screen in the comfort of your living room.

the forecasts seem to be turning from snow to rain for the immediate region where ETR is being held. Some of the teams in the competition may have some complicated travels back home. if the latest forecasts hold, ETR has avoided a rather messy situation for competitors, spectators, and all others attending the event.

Along these lines, Dice, did you get a chance to see Luke Nichter from Chambersburg? I know he had to come from behind in his last two matches, but curious as to your thoughts and if you heard anything about his recruitment. Thanks for your contributions.

@dunkej01
Now that this thread is revived, I finally remembered to reply to you after the tournament.

Unfortunately 113 was one of the two or three weight classes that really got hit at our tournament due to scratches and the couple of teams that couldn't make it due to weather concerns. It was just one of those unlucky things that hit that weight class - there were probably only about 6 AAA state level type wrestlers in a weight class that I've seen as many as 20 of those type of kids before. So I only really got to see Biscoe in a couple of decent matches. Unfortunately he got the snot rode out of him against the two quality kids he faced (Guida and Kowalski) and didn't even threaten to score. Faced off against a fellow freshman in Alex Hanley (although I think Biscoe is a year older if I'm not mistaken) in the 7th place match and kind of big-boy'd him. '

Don't really want to criticize here, as there are still 3 years to go in his career and who knows what the future brings, but I would probably be extremely surprised if he's ranked 23rd or top 30 or whatever he is by FLO right now in his class, this time next year. Incoming freshman rankings are a complete crapshoot anyway and just basically a ranking of events won without regard to competition, age, development, etc.

Could very well end up as a D1 wrestler, but that's a long ways and a lot of projection away. Check back in a couple of years.

SoCo does have a super frosh, though, but he's just got a different last name.

I have seen Luke wrestle many times both inseason and offseason. He had two tremendous matches in his semifinal and finals. I haven't really thought much about him as a recruit, but my initial impression thinking about it is that he doesn't really wow you with anything, but is a tremendous gamer. That's not just because of his ETR performance, I've seen that from him before. And IMO that counts for a ton when it comes to translating at the next level. I'm sure he's going to end up wrestling D1 somewhere, no idea about who is recruiting him.

In the semis he got down big to Lenny Pinto of Stroudsburg - a soph who is really tough, going to make some noise in Hershey this year. Just going off the top of my head but I think Nichter scored late in the 2nd, not giving Pinto a chance to return score and then had choice in the 3rd, got the escape and you knew he was going to get the TD and that was the match.

In the finals, he pretty much got dominated in all positions for 5:50 seconds by Angel Garcia of Mariana Bracetti - an under the radar Beat the Streets kid with a ton of talent. I had Angel on a freestyle team this spring and he handed Edmond Ruth his behind (unfortunately Spyker was not in attendance, ergo no Cael FCP!). The year before I had Angel on our Waterway team coming into his soph year and he beat a couple of kids with state medals. Just doesn't get any partners/training with his team during the season but very talented. Garcia got a little greedy and tried to score another TD on a go-behind with about 10 seconds to go as icing on the cake and Luke came up with a body lock and 2 and 2'd him for the win. That's pretty clutch, although I guess there are pluses and minuses to the performance from a recruiting standpoint.

Thanks Dice. I was super impressed by Garcia - very slick. Nichter doesn't wow you with athleticism but he does have great hips. Reminds me of Nate Brown maybe. I have no idea how he projects at the next level though. Thanks for your thoughts

Speaking of Nichter and Ruth, they are both at 170, both D3 AAA -- so they will meet at SC Regionals and quite possibly in the state finals.

Gavin Garcia last weekend lost to returning state finalist Caleb Dowling 5-4 UTB. Not bad for his 6th career varsity match.

Of note about one other ETR entrant: shaping up for a monster PA state finals at 132 -- Chlebove vs. Hillegas.

Some notes about every kid discussed.

I’ve had Nichter on my youth dual team for an entire season. Very solid kid and good listener. Wants to be the best and that’s all you can ask from as a coach. Does he have Kurt McHenry or Malcom Robinson athleticism, who I’ve also coached? No, but he’s a good technician and will be a solid D-1 wrestler.

I’ve seen Angel Garcia wrestle for years and he’s got a lot of untapped potential. Very athletic! In a great room, he can become great, but has never had this. Whoever signs him is getting close to a blank canvas to paint. Watch out for him.

Gavin Garcia is special. I have Nick Feldman, who is also a special freshman, and Garcia beat him in the PJW Finals last year. I’ve seen Gavin dominate over the years, and he has a chance to be the #1 recruit overall in the entire class. He’s that good.

I just coached my National Youth Team at Tyrants and McDonogh over the past three weeks. Got to coach against McKay from West Allegheny, who is the #2 Overall recruit, and also coached against the #4 and #7 Overall at McDonogh. McKay is one of the best 8th Graders I’ve seen and much better than #4 and #7. Kid is going to be very, very special.

Bonus Note: Michael Beard was going to be in my corner this past weekend coaching at McDonogh against David Taylor and Mark McKnight (M2), but caught a 24hr stomach bug. Just a bunch of PSU wrestlers giving back to the kids. M2 got us by 3 after we beat them at Tyrants. David and I were talking afterwards and it’s going to be a good rivalry for years to come.

Gaige and Gavin Garcia aren’t bad considering they basically do no off season wrestling....
