OT - Best Tag Lines from Song Lyrics

Don't know the song really well (hell, don't even remember who sang it at the moment), but a country tune from a few years back had a very simple chorus that I love:

God is great
Beer is good
And people are crazy

Now how bout this one...

I know money can't buy happiness:

But it can buy me a boat.
It can buy me a truck to pull it..
It can buy me a Yeti 110
Iced down with some Silver Bullets....

The Pretender
Jackson Browne

I'm gonna find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint by number dreams
And then we'll put our dark glasses on
And we'll make love until our strength is gone
And when the morning light comes streaming in
We'll get up and do it again
Get it up again
Amen

Al Stewart "Old Admirals"
I can well recall the first time I ever put to sea,
It was on the old "Calcutta" in eighteen fifty-three.
I was just a lad of fourteen years, a midshipman to be
To make my way in sailing ships of the Royal Navy.

By the time that I was twenty-one I'd sailed the world around,
Weathered storms in the China seas with the hatches battened down,
And made my way by starlight off the coast of Newfoundland
And dined on beer and herrings while the waves blew all around.

I live in retirement now and through my window comes the sound
Of seagulls and sets my mind remembering.
The evening stars like memories sail far beyond the distant trees
Way out across the open seas I hear them sing.

Oh, the wooden ships they turned to iron and the iron ships to steel
And shed their sails like autumn leaves with the turning of the wheel
And I was given Captain's rank, and soon took under me
the proudest ship that ever sailed for Queen and country.

Ah, the old queen she passed away with the newborn century
And I received my calling up to the admiralty.
The sands ran through the hourglass each day more rapidly
As we watched the growing of the fleets of High Germany.

So at last the Great War blazed I waited with the passing days
a call to arms that never came, writing letters.
"I may be old now in your eyes, but all my years have made me wise,
You don't see where the danger lies, oh call me back, call me back..."

But the war, it ran its course they could find no use for me
And I live in the country now, grandchildren on my knee
And sometimes think in all this world the saddest thing to be
Old admirals who feel the wind and never put to sea.

Now just like you, I've sailed my dreams like ships across the sea
And some of them they've come on rocks and some faced mutiny
And when they're sunken one by one I'll join that company -
Old admirals who feel the wind, and never put to sea.

Another John Prine song - Sam Stone

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothin, I suppose

And from Prine's Angel from Montgomery

How the hell can a person
Go to work in the morning
And come home in the evening
And have nothing to say

Love Prine. Guess he's folk, not country but another great writer who had many covers from the greats. "Paradise," "Angels" was covered by at least John Denver and Bonnie Raitt that I know of.

I just have to put this out here. No particular tag line, but here are some KK songs that casual fans may not know...He wasn't just a Highwayman. He was a Rhodes Scholar and a chopper pilot in the Vietnam era.

Pilgrim, Ch. 33
For The Good Times (Ray Price)
Silver Tongued Devil
Best of All Possible Worlds

Just google the lyrics of these songs. Greatness. For that matter, Willie as well was a tremendous songwriter.

Electrical Banana....

The piano sounds like a carnival, the microphone smells like a beer...

The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls

Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white,
But we decide which is right.
And which is an illusion???

One more from John Prine - Dear Abby

Dear Abby, Dear Abby...
Well I never thought
That me and my girlfriend would ever get caught
We were sitting in the back seat just shooting the breeze
With her hair up in curlers and her pants to her knees
Signed Just Married

Just Married, Just Married...

[Chorus]

Lyle Lovett is another great lyricist:

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
I said me upon my pony on my boat

Popularized by the Byrds. I think he wrote it for them or gave it to them
True that the byrds made it pop but they recorded it 3 years after he did. I'm admittedly a Dylan snob and have always had a pet peeve with other artists making hits on his talent.
This song is a special one because it signifies Dylan moving from his folky protest persona to his rock and roll personna.

That said, it's a freaking awesome line.

Other favs:

JCM-
Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone

Foo Fighters-
And I wonder when I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

DMB-
Oh when you come crash into me
And I come into you

Black Crows-
Says she talks to angels
Says they call her by her name

Willie Nelson-
Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
Don't let em play guitars and drive them old trucks
Let em be doctors and lawyers and such

Pearl Jam-
She lies and says she's in love with him
Can't find a better man
She dreams in color she dreams in red
Can't find a better man

John Denver-
The Colorado Rocky Mountain High
I've seen it raining fire in the sky
You can talk to God
And listen to the casual reply

Nirvana-
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us

Dixie Chicks-
I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
I'm still mad as hell, and I don't have time
To go 'round and 'round and 'round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
'Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is
You think I should

Allison Krauss (the voice I hope to hear when I enter the Pearly Gates)-
The smile on your face let's me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes saying you'll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you'll catch me if wherever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all

Can't believe no Bruce yet:

Tunnel of love:

Fat man sitting on a little stool
Takes the money from my hand while his eyes take a walk all over you.

Thunder road:
Entire song!

Johnny 99:
Entire song!

And one from Springsteen:

Some guys they just give up living
And start dying little by little, piece by piece
Some guys come home from work and wash up
And go racing in the street

One last one. John Hiatt's "Perfectly Good Guitar":

There out to be a law with no bail
Smash a guitar and you go to jail
With no chance for early parole
You don't get out ti'll you get some soul

I said "I'm so happy I could die,"
She said "Drop dead" and left with another guy.
--Elvis Costello, "The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me,
Than have to have a frontal lobotomy.
I might be drunk but at least I'm not insane.
--I can't remember who did that one

I'll never make partner at this rate,
Not with Jane F***ing Fonda Junior as my date

and

She thinks because she read books she must be smarter,
But now when i close my eyes I'll be f***ing Jimmy Carter

Both from Ben Folds "The Bitch Went Nuts" (fake version instead of the real version that appeared on the album, which was completely different)

And did you exchange,
A walk on part in a war
For a lead role in a cage

Well he came down to dinner in his Sunday best
Excitable boy, they all said
And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest
Excitable boy, they all said

LOL, good one.
I'll add another one of his thats one of my favorites...

I want to live alone in the desert
I want to be like Georgia O'Keefe

and one that seems very topical today and somewhat prescient. LOL...

I went home with a waitress the way I always do
How was I to know she was with the russians, too?

I was gambling in havana, I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns, and money
Dad, get me out of this

Some of my favorites....

Joe Walsh:

My Maserati does 185. I lost my license, now I don't drive.

Don McLean:

This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.

.... and ....

There we were all in one place. A generation lost in space.

Roger Watters:

Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in the cage?

Peter Gabriel:

You can keep my things they've come to take me home.

Janis Joplin (written by Kris Kristofferson):

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose.

Jethro Tull

He who made kittens put snakes in the grass

And I've been kicked by the wind
Robbed by the sleet
Had my head stoved in
But I'm still on my feet
And I'm willin', oh, I'm willin'

I've been run down and I've been lied to.
And I don't know why, I let that mean woman make me a fool.
She took all my money, wrecks my new car.
Now she's with one of my good time buddies,
They're drinkin in some cross-town bar.

Where do all the secrets live
They travel in the air
You can smell them when they burn
They travel
Those who say the past is not dead
Stop and smell the smoke
You keep on saying the past is not dead
Come on and smell the smoke
You keep saying the past is not even past
You keep saying
We are, smoke

I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the axe just fell

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah, give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

She wanted me to come but I was already there:oops:
