Buffett
If the phone doesn't ring, you'll know it's me.

You can spend all your love making time.

Buffett:
If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane.

Tritt:
Here's a quarter, call someone who cares.

Joni Mitchell
See the geese in chevron flight flapping and racing on before the snow
They've got the urge for going and they've got the wings so they can go

John Denver/Placido Domingo from Perhaps Love.

"If I should live forever,
And all my dreams come true,
My memories of love will be of you."

Denver wrote those words and if there is a better expression of love in any other song, I can't think of it.

Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs
Woolly Bully

The Police
Roxanne. You don't have to put the red light.

Jefferson Airplane

Coyote

Coyote's in the coffee shop

Bob Dylan

I'm just average, common too
I'm just like him, the same as you
I'm everybody's brother and son
I ain't different from anyone
It ain't no use a-talking to me
It's just the same as talking to you.

"Subterranean Homesick Blues"

Johnny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
It's somethin' you did
God knows when
But you're doing it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin' for a new friend
A man in the coonskin cap, in the pig pen
Wants eleven dollar bills, you only got ten

Maggie comes fleet foot
Face full of black soot
Talkin' that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phone's tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
Orders from the D.A. Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't tie no bows
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows

Oh, get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Hang bail, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You're gonna get hit
But losers, cheaters
Six-time users
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders, watch the parkin' meters

Oh, get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance
Learn to dance, get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't want to be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles

A little known and underrated singer / songwriter Graham Parker, who I once saw at PSU.

If you can't sell your work
Then cut off your ear

Todd Snider:

I was looking for a job when I found this one
Don't need the work like you need the work done

Billy Joel, very underrated songwriter IMO..

I believe I've passed the age
of consciousness and righteous rage
I found that just surviving was a noble fight.
I once believed in causes too
I had my pointless point of view
And life went on no matter
Who was wrong or right.

If you ever get the chance to visit Winslow, AZ (really not much there at all, but not far from Sedona which is SO WORTH IT), there is a mural on the side of a building called "Standin' on a Corner" which depicts this entire scene from the song. Kinda cool.

You've been bad, you don't do what I say
You don't listen, you never obey
Try to train you, but you just won't be good
You won't behave the way a big girl should
It's time to give that whip a crack
I'm gonna have to send you back to Bitch School

Spinal Tap
From Break Like the Wind 1992

Billy Joel (agree, an under appreciated lyricist) -
And the waitress is practicing politics
While the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinking alone

Queen -
Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun inside his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead

Pink Floyd -
There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb

Aerosmith -
Yeah, sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
Sing with me, just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away
Dream on
Dream on
Dream on
Dream until your dream comes true

John Denver (one of my favorite lyricists ever) -
Close your eyes and rest your weary mind. I promise I will stay right here beside you. Today our lives were joined, became entwined. I wish you could know how much I love you.

U2 -
My hands are tied
My body bruised, she got me with
Nothing to win
And nothing left to lose

R.E.M. -
It's the end of the world as we know it
And I feel fine

Johnny Cash -
When I was just a baby my mama told me son
Always be a good boy don't ever play with guns
But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die

My brother in law lives near Phoenix but drove out there one day just to have his photo taken there. I need to do that one day, but I doubt if any girls we be slowing down.

Not to be nit picky, but as a huge Buffett fan....
That line is in the song 2 ways
- If the phone doesn't ring you'll know that it's me
- if the phone doesn't ring it's me

Heck, Buffett is the best lyricist there is:
If we weren't all crazy we would go insane
I must look a mess I must admit, but I have been travelin' quite a bit
There's something about this Sunday, it's a most peculiar gray
Pale invaders and tan crusaders worshipping the sun, on the corner of walk and don't walk somewhere on US1.
My head hurts, my feet stink and I don't love Jesus

I have been drunk now for over two weeks
Passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks
But I gotta stop wishin;
Got to go fishin'
Down to rock bottom again
With just a few friends....

Great lyricist. Some songs sound the same but that happens when you write so many. JMO.

Don't know the song really well (hell, don't even remember who sang it at the moment), but a country tune from a few years back had a very simple chorus that I love:

God is great
Beer is good
And people are crazy

By Bobby Bare:

Drop kick me, Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end, neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me, Jesus through the goal posts of life
Make me, oh make me, Lord more than I am
Make me a piece in your master game plan
Free from the earthly temptations below
I've got the will, Lord if you've got the toe

John Prine - 4 way stop dilemma

They don't know how lucky they are
They could have run into that tree
Got struck by a bolt of lightning
And raped by a minority
