We've learned over the years there is very little accountability for refs in college football. I remember when a ref was caught on a hot mic while walking off the field at halftime telling Florida State's QB that they were doing everything they could to help them.
I was at a high school game this year where at the transition from 1st quarter to 2nd quarter, they changed the down from 4th to 1st. The fans, coaches and players were all yelling at the refs about the mistake, but were ignored. Later, I talked to one of the refs that I knew and he said he was aware of the mistake, but that it was the head linesman's call. I asked if he couldn't have talked to him and corrected it. He said that just isn't how it is done.
