Here's a nice article from Gary Abbott at USA Wrestling;

Tough sledding for Oliver, it's a solid field. I pulled this info from the article...

ok... starts at 3am est!

Bekbulatov 2nd round and Gadzhiev in the quarters. JO will definitely earn his qualification!
That's if Gadzhiev gets past 2019 world champ Lomtadze.

This bracket is hilarious. It's like one of the old PIAA brackets -- before they started seeding regional champs -- where the top 6 guys were all crammed into one side of the bracket, and the 7th easily made the finals.

Sheesh--Seabass is in that same half of the bracket too. Man--the winner of the top half of this bracket may be the 5th or 6th best wrestler in the tourney. Makes the "no true 2nd" all the more perplexing.

Fingers crossed for JO, but Vegas has much higher odds for Habat to qualify than he does.

He'll be tired as hell after beating everyone on that list!

JO v Yun (KOR)
  • JO looks for ankle, neither wrestler committing much so far, both keeping distance.
  • Yun on the clock; JO with the point.
  • JO warned for hands to face
  • JO again low, gets an ankle, walks him out of bounds.
  • 2-0 at the break
  • Gets an ankle again, settles for OOB. 3-0, 2:30 left.
  • Yun in on a deep shot, gets two, can't do more. 3-2.
  • JO with another ankle, looked to be going OOB, but patiently gets the other ankle, up 5-2.
  • Yun in on a shot, JO scrambles out, but Yun gets his two. 5-4.
  • JO backpedaling with time winding down, will win 5-4.

Against the 2 toughest dudes left in the bracket.

Survive and advance is the name of the game, but this doesn’t look like the JO that can win a big tournament. Someone needs to give him a Zain/Braveheart speech, stat. To my eye, he just seems tight, and maybe a little too cerebral.

The next 2 are also the toughest.

Next (quarters) = Hor OHANNESIAN (UKR) – 3rd in 2019 European Games, 2x World Team member

After that, semis will be the real test -- winner of
Beka LOMTADZE (GEO) – 2019 World champion, 2nd in 2016 Worlds, 5th in 2018 Worlds, 2x European silver medalist
vs.
Magomedmurad GADZHIEV (POL) – 2017 World silver medalist, 2019 World bronze medalist, 2016 Olympian

BTW, Habat has a decent chance at the finals on the other half. His likely toughest opponent is next, the "Frenchman," after that he would get the winner between Greece and Spain.

Of the remaining wrestlers in his side of the bracket, Habat is the highest placer at Euros.

... In a weird but good twist for the US his expected 2nd round opponent, Bekbulatov, missed weight so now JO gets guy from Korea. Bekbulatov was top ranked guy in the draw.
Kevin Jackson practiced for days saying in Russian “you still have two hours”. Sending him to shake Bekbulatov’s hand before weigh ins paid dividends! :)

Didn't get to see them live, so just watched Oliver's bouts. So far he has three takedowns and has given up three takedowns, yet he's 3-0 on the day.

What's the over-under on the number of tattoos on Oliver's (now slightly shrunken) body?
