Obli's Observations - Too Little, Too Late

Nice summary, Obli.
The problem with starting SC and having a short leash, IMO, brings you back to Saturday when Will came into the game. You have it in your summary. The game plan will likely be designed for SC skills, not WL’s skills.
Start Levis and roll with it.
To soon to call for the back up to the back up?😉. Roberson needs to get reps. (Please turn sarcasm meters up).

The bigger problem IMO of starting clifford on a short leash is that he is already pressing and that is leading to mistakes. If he knows he has a short leash, he probably presses harder. If you want clifford at his best, he doesn't need a bunch of added pressure.

The biggest difference between the 2 is that Levis runs with authority. He can physically punish some LBs and DBs which takes it's toll not only on Levis but the defenders as well. I want to see the kid play with a full week of #1 reps. He said in his presser that he only gets a couple of snaps in practice with the ones. Maybe he can develop a chemistry that Cliff could not. But ultimately there needs to be a strong, reliable running game for any qb to reach their potential.
Also, don't underestimate what happens when your QB is willing to put a safety on their a$$. Michael Robinson and Kerry Collins come to mind. In 94 Kerry ran over a defender in an early game (maybe game 1) and then MRob destroyed that poor Minnesota guy that was seriously injured in 05. In both cases, it set a tone. Your QB punishes a defender and there is no excuse for the rest of the offense to not do the same, every play. Now the QB doesn't need to do it every play but it really only takes one or two times to set a tone and the entire team feeds off of that.

Putting Clifford on a leash of any kind would be a mistake. Let him sit for a while and give Levis a chance to get comfortable.

Both of those guys should not be doing designed runs except for perhaps a few plays per game. Let them develop into good passers. Swing the running back out as a check down instead of expecting your QB to pick up yards when there's no place to go with the ball.

Enough already with this zone read crap. We're destroying half our offense out of some ideological belief that doesn't match our players.

And on defense, teach your guys some fundamentals. Anybody that "celebrates" at this point gets benched. It's ridiculous and inappropriate. We're 0-4. Own it. Grow up.

This is nonsense. If you are playing Levis, you are going zone read/RPO 60% of the time. That's what he brings to the table. Having him throw from the pocket would be like giving up.

What makes you think he can't throw well from the pocket, or at least as well as Clifford?

We know Dotson is a very good receiver and Parker Washington is showing good progress so far. Certainly some part of the offense should involve their abilities, which would come primarily from drop-back throws by the QB.

He has not shown much accuracy over the last 2 years. When called on he has been terribly off target on most throws requiring any zip.

All great posts and responses.....

IMO what we saw Saturday was a coaching staff again trying to do more than what they needed to do. In fact I was watching the game at my house with a Nebraska Fan. We got down inside the red zone and he kept saying "here is where we lose it".......and then 5 minutes later ask why Penn State didn't keep running the ball.

So I ask you guys.....why when we got to the red zone did we stop running the ball?

Heck maybe even dial up a screen at that time....red zone screens are effective plays.

I don't know....what I do know is every game this year (besides the buttflies game) we got outcoached in different facets of the game.

Indiana: JFF and his clock mismanagement.
Maryland: Pry leaving the middle of the field WIDE open.
Nebraska: KC quitting using what was working to show everyone how smart he is.

It seemed they'd take a TO after we'd been running it down their throats. Or one of their players would go "down." ummm, injured (somebody PUHLEEEEZE fix this idiocy... you get "injured," you can't play until the next time your team is on defense... iow, after sides change).

It also worked before the red zone. Once the monmentum was lost, we bogged down. It seemed it gave our geniuses time to call ther worst possible play on first down and screw us royally.
