You've never heard of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEV)? Where have you been?

It was first recognized as afflicting horses in 1831. The first confirmed human case was in 1938. It's been around a long time, and it can be nasty, but it's pretty rare in humans. Interestingly, only 4-5% of humans that are bitten by a mosquito that is carrying the Eastern equine encephalitis virus come down with Eastern equine encephalitis. As a result, the average number of human EEV cases in the USA per year is 7.

It's an alphavirus, which is different than a coronavirus, or a flavivirus, or a bunyavirus, etc.

Barely worth concerning yourself about this. It's a flavivirus. There is no vaccine or specific cure for this virus. However, unlike what you stated, there are treatment protocols for powassan virus.

If not diagnosed or treated, the virus can cause meningoencephalitis. Of patients that get to the encephalitis stage, about 10% of them die from the virus, and just under half of the other 90% have permanent impairment of their brain.

It is the only know tick-borne virus in North America. That said, in the first decade of the current century, there were only 33 cases of the virus in the USA. @TheGLOV's odds of getting this virus are about the same as his odds of sleeping with the UNC co-ed whose pic he posted this week. ;)

So you're saying I still have a chance?

:)

What was that CRASH hitting the floor?

Was that a glass beer bottle from days gone bye? Hmmmmmm.

;)

And you, Tom, got about the same chances as the Philadelphia Freedoms winning another team tennis title!

HA-HA!

Or the Flyers beating Sydney Crosby!

And Jelly Fish, Chesapeake and it's rivers are brutal right now.
Mobjack class sail boat race on the James River, circa 1992. I was flying the trapeze for the first time, so we went over a couple times.
After the race I counted 17 stings.....you could have walked across the river on the jellies. They were that thick.
