Noteworthy Results & Goldfish Games: Feb 9-13

Did guys sit in the other meeting?
Saucon has had a bunch of injuries made a couple of changes but I wouldn't say they tanked on purpose last week.
Some kids stepped up. Mateo's win was an example of different results. Mateo lost to Wehr twice by major this season. Jake Jones had a big pin. Jones is tough.
What a difference a week makes

Keegan is a beast. I think he wins 165 this year but I really want to see him vs Wick. Cradle city

It was a clearly diminished Mastro. Something wrong with at least one leg and/or knee. I’d say even the folks on HR noted it in their comments about the match, but they tend to be less than kind when posting about Ybarra regardless. I hope the kid transfers and becomes a 3x AA. He looks pretty good to me for a freshman going against returning AAs.

Keegan is a monster, no doubt. That said, give me the cagey veteran, Wick. I’ll put those two in the finals if they’re on opposite sides of the bracket.
Marinelli 4-1 against Wick. O’Toole hasn’t faced Griffith, Wick, Kharchla, Marinelli, or Hamiti. Not saying he can’t do it but we have seen guys from Missouri look unbeatable against inferior competition and then get beat at NCAA’s.

Agree with the Mizz theory, but KOT sure looked good winning his World Title, and THAT was hardly inferior competition.

I say KOT in finals against one of Kharchla or Hamiti.
Of course seeds/placement could put all 3 on same side….

The Mizzou theory doesn’t hold up for O’Toole. He’s already placed third at NCAAs as well. I don’t think he needs to prove himself against Marinelli, Kharchla, or Hamiti. Those guys haven’t proven themself near as much as O’Toole. It is ass backwards to think a returning 3rd placer who is undefeated needs to prove themself against freshman who’ve never wrestled a match at NCAAs or a guy whose best finish is 6th in 3 attempts.

That said, I’m not picking O’Toole to win. I think his style gives up points often. That weight class will be an absolute meat grinder and don’t see him stringing them all together.

I like Wick.

O'Toole did finish 3rd at nationals last year, so lumping him in with the rest of Missouri seems a bit unfair.

That said, he teched Valencia last year 16-1, so yesterday's pin doesn't really much.

That bracket could go a hundred different directions. Winner should be in OW conversation.

You’re right, he didn’t face any of the “top guys” you mention like Hamiti or Kharchla who weren’t at NCAAs. Or of course Marinelli who DNP.

They will all be there this year along with Wick. Going to be a tougher road than last year. A Missouri wrestler hasn’t won a title since J’Den Cox in 2017.

Agree it will be tougher this year, and I’m not picking him to win. Although, he is 100% a legitimate contender along with about 4 other guys. Personally not putting Hamiti or Kharchla in the conversation yet.

Also not putting him in the same category of Mizzou guys who only look better on paper. O’Toole is legit.

When was the last Iowa champion at a weight this high? Not exactly stellar up there either. Jbo in 2012? 20 years?
Joel Sharratt (1994) at the old 190 weight class. Jay Borschel won at 174 in 2010. the most recent upper weight was Steve Mocco in 2003. Must go back to the Branach/Alger era (early 1980's) to find anyone in the heaviest 3 weight classes before that.

When you put it down in black and white it makes it seem more dismal than left in my head. Makes me appreciate what Cael and his superb staff has done cranking out champions from 125 all the way through hwt.

Imagine if you went all the way back to 1976. It would really prove your point.

I attended an Iowa wrestling camp a few times (92-93) and I must say that Troy and Terry Steiner were awesome instructors. They taught us much more clinical technique than one might expect. Sadly, much of it was lost on a bum like myself but my teammates seemed to really improve!

[insert eyeroll] Always amazed how douches believe themselves humerous.

One thing to consider, I don't believe Wick or O'Toole cut very much, if at all. That might factor into how Marinelli does against them on Day 2. Definitely a factor to consider about Suriano and Glory also as well. It also might be why I'm pretty high on Max regardless of how he looks at times right now (as long as he's healthy)

Agree on Suriano, somewhat on Glory, not sure about Marinelli, and not at all on Wick. IDK what happened this year, but Wick seemed sucked out in 2020.

Jay Baruchel looks like a 118 or 126 lber to me. Hard to believe he wrestled 174. Lengthy, but very thin.
