NIL and PSU's pushback is gonna kill our records!

You honestly think Penn St. wrestlers are getting 6-figure deals when the starting QB at Georgia is making half that? What kind of crazy pills are you people on?
6 figures does sound made up, and I don't disagree w/ the gist of your point--but I do need to point out that RBY has roughly twice the instagram followers as JT Daniels (QB1 @ UGA--140k to 70k). Daniels has an edge on twitter and fb by a few thousand. RBY blows him out of the water completely on TikTok though (nearly 100k followers to like 100). These metrics mean a lot to would-be sponsors.

Some real overreactions here. Have no clue about this but smarter heads will prevail. This is a new system and some kinks will need to be worked out. Cael isn’t going nowhere.

150% agree.

Like others here I bet, I have been on the PSU message boards since Derrick Williams verballed to the "University of Penn State." Over the years, I have found 3 things to be near iron-clad true on the boards:

1) The initial hysteria is never worth the energy or bother.

2) Things are fluid, always changing, and almost always work out in the end.

3) The answer is always somewhere in the middle.

The only event over all these years that truly destroyed everything in its path was the Sandusky Scandal.

PSU isn’t Harvard or Princeton. Mucho dinero is made through it’s athletics and the big donors who support it. I am guessing the latter will have a corner talk with the bigwigs this weekend at the white out…and just like after one of the Oracle’s cookies, Cael and co will be right as rain.

I was going to wait until someone else brought it up because I know he's not popular on this board. Brantt on 247 mentioned a few PSU wrestlers landed 6 figure NIL deals and the school is not approving them for whatever reason. Can we get some big guns involved? This can be very bad if it isn't fixed.
Great, don't know Brantt on 247 but you McScoreley caught the attention of Mr. Pat Mineo

He might be mad he did not break this story, lol.

You're missing the biggest number: TV viewership. 8 million people watched Georgia vs Clemson. 324,000 watched #1 Iowa and #2 Penn St in 2020.

The Georgia vs Alabama SEC Championship game will be watched by around 15 million people. That's why Bryce Young got a million dollars. Because the ratings are 46x larger than the biggest wrestling matches. 1,000,000/46 = 21.7k

That's why with multiple national champs if a single Penn St. wrestler was getting more than 5k-10k, it's a massive haul.

JT Daniels is the QB of a billion-dollar brand that prints money. RBY is one of several national champions on a money-losing program. It's not comparable.

5 Star basketball recruits are jumping straight to professional leagues because the NIL money hasn't materialized as expected.

I'm not missing that--but we aren't comparing RBY's brand to UGA Football's. Daniels' "ads" aren't going to run on a tv telecast of a Bulldog's game either, I'm guessing; maybe in some markets. UGA Football's social media outlets aren't going to repost his ads either. Daniel's potential brand is certainly higher than RBY's, but RBY has a considerably larger captive audience for his sponsorships right now--money in the bank (almost). He's established a brand, shown he knows how to use it--so he'd be a safer signee right now. Again--I'm not saying RBY will get the same offers he does, but his considerable work on his platforms puts him in a better place than you might guess for a "fringe" sport.

I do agree that RBY has marketed himself very well. But JT Daniels doesn't need to by social media.

Let's say we start Nerfstate LLC, a new clothing brand for high-performance athletes. What would you pay to have JT Daniels wear Nerfstate hat, armbands, towel, and other swag during a game? Imagine multiple close-ups of Daniel on the sideline sporting your brand with 15 million people watching.

Umm--I'm pretty sure Daniels is going to have to wear school-issued apparel on the sideline. Maybe not in the press room after the game, but probably. He can certainly wear whatever he wants around campus--but that's significantly less reach than social media. If he winds up a Heisman finalist or something, Daniels could maybe land someone like Nike, and do national television ads., then all bets are off. But social media has upended a lot of how companies think about marketing on smaller scales--largely because ROI is much more easily measured.

I saw someone somewhere else suggest that this could be a big donor overpaying and that might be why the university is nervous. It's not a secret that you guys have a couple huge donors for the NLWC. Maybe one of them is offering a well above market value NIL to a couple guys?

Sounds like a college I could actually be accepted to....

Yeah...probably not. :(

Are you suggesting our wrestlers are opening an Ira?

Well, this is the obvious flaw in the whole NIL concept - what’s to keep, say, a big time college football QB from signing autographs for a car dealership at a huge markup beyond vague rules about the payment being “reasonable” for the service.

One thing this has done has been to likely increase the typical power 5 school’s athletic compliance budget 10-fold.

Could be that Lubert is signing guys to advertise for his casino. That would require a second look. Pure speculation on my part.
Highly unlikely. Gambling industry is explicitly forbidden in the PA NIL law. Lubert is too tied in with Harrisburg to miss something like that.

"fair market value" is often in the eyes of the beholder so this presents obvious conflicts

At least the imagined QB would be selling/endorsing something. I would guess it comes down to intent. Is PSU blocking RBY from signing with Rudis? Or is it a deep pockets, PSU (insert any school here) Sugar Daddy who wants to "lease" his name for 100K a year while at PSU? If its the former, then there are problems because there are deals, like Spencer's, that are getting done. If it's the latter, then it could be a gray area compliance issue. What would be the difference in just offering recruits money from a briefcase? I don’t know. But I do think this is something that will get ironed out…right now it seems like the Wild West.

It always been the wild west in football and basketball, NIL just legalizes it now. For the other sports, hard to believe it is nothing more than a small potatoes. A star might be able to get a nice deal for a sports camp, but probably not much more than that. Take RBY, the majority of the PSU student body does not even know who he is, probably the same for the local community.

Outside of the starting QB at Alabama, the majority of SEC quarterbacks are getting deals between $5,000 and $50,000.

Never go full HR. Never.

Isn't Nick Lee under a Ram dealer NIL

didn't see it on HR and wasn't meant in a conspiratorial way. seems like a legit possibility and something every major program is going to have to figure out.

At least put a winkie emoji at the end.

No, that commercial was gratis for an old family friend.
And that honestly wasn’t even close to what I was talking about.

What is going to be interesting as well is when a guy - like this ballyhooed OSU Freshman QB who left high school early and got a huge deal - ends up sucking. Imagine the awkwardness when the deal gets pulled or the company uses the contractual fine print to hold back some benefits that the athlete thought were earned

Maybe the wrestlers will have to give a portion of their NIL earnings to the corrupt BOT members, just like the contractors that get hired for University work.😡

One can not do what you are proposing under the NIL.

No school image is allowed.

But Penn State is in the Midwest, so who knows what this is …

Market Value is what someone is willing to pay. This can't be ruled by imaginary metrics that really aren't measurable.

The biggest problem with this is there is no way to differentiate between a good, fair deal for an apparel company and an individual athlete, a player that does local/statewide commercials or an aggressive alum offering $100k for an autograph deal. It's the wild west out there.

We'll soon see players get in trouble because they didn't pay taxes, there will be videos of players tossing money around in strip clubs, there will be companies taking advantage of an athlete and there will be a story of a deal made that turned out to be a steal for the company.

Who can regulate this? Different or no laws in different states pretty much keep the NCAA from wanting to touch it.

y'all getting your panties in a bunch about nothing
