Could be, but there's no way of knowing without seeing the letter of intent and its specific terms. Maybe Kobe was simply licensing his name to these academies for a fee, a 'la Trump and his various hotel licensees. Moreover, letters of intent are typically non-binding, meaning there would be no binding commitment on Kobe's part until a subsequent binding agreement was executed.
